We were told in the orientation to put all of the documents/photos/videos/music/anything important from our computers onto a flash drive. Is customs really going through people's hard drives?!? Seems like an awful lot of work to go through. If this is the case I'm going to have to come up with an idea on how to make sure I don't lose all of my family's pictures.

O&GEngg,
Orientation is going to tell you what could happen, so that just in case it actually does happen you can't say "But you never told me...". The problem is that here in the Kingdom, almost anything could happen (but almost never does). So in theory, customs is allowed to go through every inch of your luggage and shipments (as any customs anywhere is allowed to do) and confiscate anything that does not meet a strict definition of "allowed". But in practice, they don't really care anymore about family pictures or children's dolls or "holiday" season decorations. I'm sure it happens, but since coming more than a year and a half ago, I've never met anyone that had anything confiscated. Of course, this doesn't apply to trying to bring in any of the things that really are forbidden - I'm sure you know what I mean & the penalties for doing so are severe.
And backing up (at least twice for the truly valuable stuff) is always an extremely good idea. We lost almost all the pictures of my daughter from age 0 to 5 when a laptop hard drive cratered and the back up drive that fried six months before hadn't been replaced - ouch.

We are due to arrive early August. One thing we have done with our photos is to create a Gmail account.this allows you to store up to 15 Gb on drive.google.com which should ensure that we both have them safe and and can access them in Kingdom.

Keith317, That's fine, but just so as you're aware, you will need to have home internet access before you can access your gmail or google drive. Online email and stoe sites cannot be accessed from company computers in the office.

GroveWanderer,
Are they blocked? What other types of sites are blocked? YouTube? CNN/FoxNews? Facebook/Twitter? What about tech blog sites, like Engadget?

Thanks. Worth knowing. No hardship, though, pretty well the same as where I am now.
