A number of people in the UK have been taken to court for things they have posted on Twitter or Facebook. Some have been found guilty of offences and received various sentences including jail time. I don't know that Saudi Arabia is so unusual in this regard. Although the range of punishments is different here, that is true of any offence, not just those involving social media.
