Ok,
I have a sinking feeling this is going to be a topic of great disappointment for me and my eccentric hobby of koi keeping, but here goes. I have heard from other Aramcons I have spoken to that there are people keeping koi ponds in Dhahran. When I searched for koi on this forum, I got only ONE hit, and it was a lady simply mentioning she had a koi pond. I just spent 18 months personally (by myself for everything but the concrete pouring and block laying) constructing a 12,000 gallon state-of-the-art engineering wonder in my 2 acre yard. I'm so depressed I am considering abandoning it after all the work I put into it (the yard AND the pond). Anyway, the inhabitants of said pond are hand selected pieces of living art from famous Japanese breeders, some of which are now over 25", and worth thousands. The problem with this is that in order to simply sell them, you need to find a buyer who appreciates the appraised value. Obviously nobody hocking them on Craigslist would get even a fraction of that money. So it would be optimal to be able to just keep the fish. Which I am certain will be a logistical nightmare, if it is even possible. Does anyone here have ANY experience importing fish? They have to be shipped overnight. I have a friend who could probably lay them over in New Jersey, or Hawaii, and I could probably find a way to get them to Japan if there are complications coming directly from the US to Saudi. I have a semi portable filter I could send over there and a temp pond I could keep them in, probably in the gae while I make the new home. I have a feeling the answer here is to simply give up the fish I have, sell them for pennies on the dollar and start over -sigh-. But I thought I would ask.
I have another question for anyone else who has managed to keep koi over there. I'm thinking they probably have to be brought inside during the summer. I don't see them surviving 130 degrees in the sun outside in the summer. My buddy told me during the summer they had a hot tub there, and even without heating the water and with the cover on, the water in it was hot (near scalding) to the touch in the summer. What do you do with your fish in the summer? Ok, if you are out there master of koi in Saudi, please answer and help me out here with this predicament. Thanks in advance.
