I've read a lot on this forum and some online about driving on the highways over there. Is it really that dangerous? And does it (the dangerous roads, etc.) prevent you from going out of the compound as much as you would like?

Yes, driving outside the camp can be very dangerous. A relatively small percentage of drivers drive very recklessly (driving >50 km/hr over the speed limit, passing on the shoulders, tailgating, rapidly changing lanes, etc.). Horrible accidents on the highways are not at all uncommon. In addition, there are a lot of drivers of trucks and heavy vehicles that are not overly qualified, nor particularly safety-conscious. I think many of us would leave the camp more often if the roads were safer. That being said, there are things you can do to stay relatively safe on the road. Never be in a hurry, stay calm and don't react angrily to a reckless driver, if possible drive in early morning (much fewer cars on the road, and it seems most of the reckless drivers prefer to sleep late). The Kingdom can be a beautiful and fascinating place and it would be a shame to miss most of that by remaining in the camp.

Sure it is a bit risky driving outside the compound. We only go out once a week to get groceries. if we have to go out during evenings, we always take Aramco bus.

It will truly depend on your husband's comfort level re: driving outside camp. We drive outside camp all the time, not a problem for us. We have friends who don't mind at all also and we have friends who only take the bus off camp. Defensive driving is a must. Wutz gave good advice.

Wow, incredible advice! Yes, I do hope to take full advantage of the sights....do not want to miss out like you stated, but certainly want to be safe. It is very encouing to hear your tips! I think taking the preventative measures you stated would help us a great deal. Thank you!

Wife said she is thankful driving is going to be handle only by me, she gets really nervous, even if women were allowed to drive she would never do it, considering the stats of the kingdom regarding car accidents
