Could someone living there let me know what the furniture is like in the houses. We are trying to decide whether we want to ship ours or not. Also, is there a furniture store nearby? I have a baby and will need to purchase a crib if we don't bring ours. Thanks so much!!

Your relocation advisor should be able to provide you with a PDF brochure, which has pictures of the furniture and also the floorplan.
There are many furniture stores in Khobar area from the mid-level to high-end. We bought some very nice children furnitures from Pottery Barn Kids at Dhahran Mall. They also have the regular Pottery Barn, IKEA, SACO, and many local furniture stores.

Good Morning, The pictures of the furniture of the Rakah homes looks great. When we move in, is the furniture new? Are the mattresses new? Also, can someone provide specifics on the washer and dryer. We are trying to determine whether we should bring ours.
Many thanks, Amit

Something to know about Rakah houses: the houses are fully equipped and the furniture are intended to stay in the homes; this is different from other compounds such as Dhahran, where - I understood - the furniture is provided for free during the first three months and after that time you have to pay a rent if you want to keep them.
In my case, this is quite a messy situation because I got informed by AOC only two days before the mover came and insisting repeatedly to know where I will go that I will be in Rakah, instead of originally Dhahran (more exactly Khobar).
When we prepared our shipment, we did as if we would require all of our stuff, items, households, appliances, etc... When they told us about Rakah, it was too late to do it differently, and also at the time of packing it was not clear to us that the furniture could be kept at no additionnal cost.
Then the movers packed everything and also put some boxes and light items within some pieces of furniture that have not been dismantled; I now need to discuss with the shipment people in order to understand what can be done, because we are now practically forced to unpack everything, but at least several pieces of furnitures are really not needed, such as beds, wardrobes, desks, and although the house is very spacious, I don't want to pile up items somewhere in the home.

Contact Aramco re removing the Rakah furniture you do not want to use. They are removing furniture for those whose shipments bring in furniture. Go to the housing office and talk to the supervisor in Rakah.

Yes, I will do that. But the furniture is of good quality and uniform. I am very happy with it and would like to keep it.

When your shipment arrives you can always sell your furniture that comes on the Aramco Classifieds that you can access at work.
It may be possible to contact your shipper and have things removed if the shipment has not left yet, or you pay for it to be returned once it arrives.

I would not sell it because there are mainly some stylish, massive-wood, quality pieces, which I want to have for a later date when my assignement with Aramco ends.
I also can not return it because I left definitively my previous location and I have no other place to go.
The point is really, they should have informed me earlier. All I got from AOC was a phone statement that I will be in Rakah only two days before the mover came. No brochure, no details, nothing. I got the brochure from you per email.

Decisions! Decisions! Which furniture do you live with?
I am sorry you are in this situation.

Hi, We didn't ship anything as we thought we will buy from here but guess what the furniture is great, same as you see in the brochure and the towels are new, bed sheets new, mattresses new, basically everything is new here. I would advice don't ship just get your cash in lieu and enjoy

Enough towels to begin with but just one set of bed sheets, and some people don't like it because it is polyester; I have no problem with.
Well, selling is a decision that depends on the estimated price of your belongings. In my case the cash in lieu would not have made it out.

So, it sounds like I should not buy a new mattress to ship out if I am housed Rakah, even if only housed there temporarily before being transferred to another compound?

There is a Sealy mattress store down the street from Rakah. The mattresses that come with the place are pretty firm, but we got used to them by the time we got around to looking at mattresses and decided not to bother.
