Hi everyone, I received an offer to work in Dhahran and live in Abqiaq. RT, Rakha and Dhahran are not available to me. I’m aware of the positives and negatives of living in Abqaiq. So I’m questioning, will a gated residential compound in Al Khobar be (or anywhere in the city of Dammam) better? Whats leading me to seek accommodation outside the Aramco compound is 1) The commute to and from Dhahran 2) My wife (dependent visa) can’t be contained inside a home. She’s cosmopolitan, she likes to go out to markets and walk around the city and explore. Abqaiq seems a little remote.
The negatives of a non-aramco compound 1) Less secure 2) More expensive – paying for living expenses 3) The mutawa (religious police) can come into a non-aramco gated compound (is this true?) 4) For medical, will have to go to an Aramco approved clinic.
Tough decision. But I really don’t want to catch a bus at 5:30 in the morning or drive on a dangerous highway to get to work

In the pro section:
Wife can drive and dress how she wants on the ABQ compound. All the women's activities that are in ABQ that won't be in a compound in the local community.
Aramco provides shopping buses for the ABQ residents. Your wife will still be able to go explore.
Yes, you have a commute, but your wife will be happily busy if she chooses to get involved, while you are at work.

I'm not so sure about some of your quoted "negatives."
1. Some outside compounds are possibly more secure than the company ones - entry procedures can be much more stringent and vehicle inspections much more thorough. 2. Depending on the compound you choose, you may or may not be "out of pocket" in terms of the rental assistance allowance the company gives you, as compared to the rent you would have to pay for company accommodation. 3. I have not heard of this happening. I suppose theoretically it might, but then theoretically they could come into an Aramco compound (although once again, I have not heard of this happening). 4. Again, not sure this necessarily means you would be worse off, there are some very good hospitals around and the company has a set of required minimum standards that all Medical Designated Facilities (MDF's) must adhere to.
