Hi,
We are looking at what we will bring with us on arrival from the UK. We will need to bring more stuff than we have cases. There has been much reference here to "dish barrel boxes" but these seem to be a purely North American phenomena.
So, to any who moved from the UK, what form of packaging/container did you use to take the stuff with you on first arrival (i.e., prior to the main shipment)?
Thanks

We moved at the end of December - there were three of us, we flew KLM and this is what we did.
We scrutinized the business class luggage allowance for the airline we were traveling with and then bought cheap suitcases which maxed out on the dimensions permitted (Argos do a nice four wheel Antler one for about GBP40). We checked in six suitcases, a child seat and a pushchair. You are allowed up to 32kg per bag and we were no where close to this weight.
Also, we maxed out on hand luggage - anything extra, (musical instruments in our case) were carried on. And who is going to insist that an oversized teddy bear must be seized from the clutches of a three year old before a six hour flight...? I think we had seven pieces of hand luggage between three of us in the end. No problems!
One consideration was simply how to get the luggage to the airport when most cars wouldn't fit the amount of luggage. We hired a van in the end - mid-sized, three seater - which we dropped off just outside heathrow (you cannot take a van into heathrow for security reasons) and then took a taxi the one mile into the terminal, which we had to take two runs on to get all the luggage there.
As an extra note - something we really wished we had known before we came - all appliances you buy over here have a standard UK plug on. So if you were thinking, as we did, about ditching small electricals and buying new here, I will say that the appliances I had back in the UK were much better than I have been able to buy locally. Pack them if you can!

I travelled via klm. Bought decent suitcases from Debenhams. 32 kg per person. Most of our stuff came via shipment which takes approximately 3 months. We were allowed for e boxes aswell. This was done by the packing company and our e boxes arrived within 2 weeks. One thing i wish i should have brought with me - MICROWAVE!

Many thanks, both. Looks like it is the cheap suitcase route then.
What size are these "e boxes"?

A ebox is 42 ins. X 29 ins. X 26 ins. and has a maximum weight of 300lbs according to the American Airlines Cargo website, it is provided by your shipping company and a dish barrel box is 18 ins. X 18 ins. X 24 ins bought at your local U-Haul or box company.
