its really hard to exchange canadian dollars here. Only few places do it, its best to do it at dammam airport. Better yet bring american dollars...

That is some useful information to have. Thank you. I suspect that the best choice would be to have Saudi Riyals; probably necessary to order well in advance at your local bank in Canada. I see it as doubtful that they would have much on-hand. And you would be able to specify the denominations so that you can ensure you have smaller denoms for tipping (portee, taxis, etc.) until you are settled in Kingdom.
