Hi,
We are just evaluating an offer to relocate from London to DHR. We (well, my wife) wondered what "wildlife" we can expect. Trawling through the forums here suggests that there are some scorpions and these are not terribly dangerous but are they a nuisance? (I.e., getting in the house etc).
What about spiders and snakes? Insects?
Finally, is there an issue with mosquitoes? If so, is that all year round or when?
Thanks for any info.

Amazing, not too many creepy crawlers. Pest control does a good job taking care of them.
We have been here 13 years and have never seen a scorpion or a camel spider. We do have friends who have seen them. There is a fly and a mosquito season. I have never been bitten by a mosquito in DHA. I have been in RT and had to use insect repellent while watching the boys play baseball.
We have tiny ants outside, a few roaches, geckos, and small bugs in the garden. There are wasps and crickets.

This is a great blog about the wildlife in Dhahran. The blogger is very responsive, if you'd like to email questions. Definitely worh time perusing, especially this time of year when migration is underway. www.birdsofsaudiarabia.com/

Hi Keith, We've been here a month now. My husband works on the health side, so I have the info from him. Scorpions are native here, but are very rare on the camp. Painful stings but not deadly. Snakes in the dessert but unlikely on camp. Poisonous ones. Camel spiders not on camp. They give an a anesthesising bite and then start feeding. They are HUGE , so you would notice them....but try not to go for a snooze on the ground in the camel compound. MERS Middle Eastern Retro Virus..not strictly a creepy Crawly as such but a bug none the less. Avoid kissing camels Mosquitos. Mosquitos carrying the malarial parasite historically presented a problem here in Saudi. Saudi Aramco went through a program of spraying and eliminating breeding sites a long time ago. There is an ongoing fogging program. All Aramco new hires are blood tested for the parasite shortly after arrival to ensure that it is not re-introduced. We have been here a month, and have dined outside at El Chicos and partied in the evenings at the Eid celebrations in the ball field (a real knees up!) and have not been bitten. roaches are constantly appearing in the house. They seem to die though whether we squidge them or not. I think the house has been treated. Cicadas sing in the trees after dark Good luck with your move Jane

Malaria is not currently endemic anywhere in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia (or Riyadh) but can be found in the south-west of the country. See map on the link below: www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/destinat ... a-map.aspx
