I'm confused about bringing computers. From the threads, I get the assumption that a work laptop is not supplied, so if I want one, I must bring/buy my own. OK.
I also have a desktop I've used for years with files/pictures/music on it that i woud much like to keep. you know,my personal stuff,my life. How much of that am I yielding moving into the country?

Yes you must furnish your own lap top. We brought our desk top over. It was not checked, we brought it in with us in excess luggage.

We brought over 2 PCs, 3 laptops, and an IPAD, none of it was searched. Yes, they have the right to, but they rarely bother us unless we give them good reason to. I wouldnt worry too much, if you want to bring you computers bring them. I cant promise you 100% nothing will happen, but you're more likely to have an accident happen from the baggage handlers or on the plane than have customs give you a hard time.

While new employees are not routinely supplied with laptops, you will normally be assigned a desktop computer (unless your job does not require it, though most do).
If your job involves a lot of travel outside the office and your department requires you to use a computer while on the move, they should supply you with a laptop for business use. This laptop remains the property of the company and you must return it when it is no longer required or you leave the company. If it goes missing, you are liable for the replacement cost.
If you have a personal laptop and want to take it to work, you may require a gate pass, depending on your office location.

We have brought two desktop computers from USA, as well as laptops and many external hard drives. Nothing has ever been searched.
What GroveWanderer said is correct.

Thanks for the replies. That eases my mind a bit.
What about flash drives or external hard drives? I figure I'll back up those important files in a couple places and hope that something gets through even if another does not.
Also, what about Ipods? Gotta have my music...

We've brought over multiple hard drives and flash drives without any problems. We've traveled with iPods and iPads without any problems as well.
Maybe if you are bringing like 10 hard drives or something, they might be suspicious...like why does someone need so many? but, really, you shouldn't have any problems. You can buy new hard drives and everything else here.
