o,
I have a Canadian drivers license that I intend on using to get my Saudi once I arrive, however, I am not a Canadian citizen. Would that work? or would my license need to be from my country of citizenship?

that will work OK. they will just convert it to Saudi.

can someone tell us what is needed to get a saudi license if you already have a license from north america?i am guessing you have to wait for the iqama to come in first. where does someone go to get your license?do they return your original license back?

The process is quite simple. Bring your US/Canadian driving license, two photos, fill out the form, pay the fee, and you will shortly have a license. The process is not terribly onerous, but is one of the few really efficient processes - you will find all the details you need through the new hire package once you arrive in Kingdom.
As a side note to new arrivals, your orientation when you arrive in Saudi Arabia provides a good introduction and a package with a very comprehensive checklist of what you need to do with time frames. It shows how to walk through all the steps and who you might need to contact. For those who are stressed out about things, they do go smoothly here once you arrive. The things to be sure of are:
1) Go to your orientation session before you arrive here
2) Attend the arrival orientation session
3) Follow the checklist provided at the arrival orientation
4) Find out who your CSL is and who is your timekeeper - these are two people who will be important to you!
5) Find at least one expat who is not jaded to help you and provide sound advice.
KSA is a great place to go, but it is very different an the most trying time is the first 6-12 months ... after that it is really quite pleasant and low stress!

I know that Canada, US, Singapore, EU countries and UK can converted directly. For a Turkish license a colleague had to take 10 hours driving lessons despite the fact that he is driving since 30 years now.
