HI, I am in the final stage of reloc, my passport is at the consulate. I have had since May to consider,re-consider this move. Can anyone tell me their overall impression of moving to KSA. There are very few people to discuss this with, as so few go abroad. What are the Pros/Cons? Will I feel isolated? My husband and son will visit, but I suspect I will be separated from them for the coming holiday season. Thanks

If you don't mind me asking...what department were you hired to work in? We are not over there yet...just applying and hoping to go. But, I am curious as to which departments get family status and which don't (typically speaking).

Try not to worry too much, plenty of others have been in exactly the same position and settled happily. Life is very much what you choose to make it - there are plenty of people to meet and activities to attend. On the other hand, if you want to keep to yourself then that's an option as well. So no, I don't think you'll feel isolated.
Depending on when you arrive, you will have to work 3 months probation. It's more difficult to get time off during this period (officially it's not allowed) but may depend on your boss. Once you get your iqama and entry/exit visa, it may be possible to head out for a weekend in a nearby location.
Good luck

Thanks. I am departing HOU on Tues Nov5. So I'll be there for Thanksgiving. I hope to either get visas for my husband and son to visit for Christmas or time off to come home. I just need to make a list of all the things I need to feel as much at home as possible- I E internet, Skype, music, etc.

UK personnel can have time off in the probation period I have asked HR. I am going home after my 9 week point here It is fine moving here you just need to adjust to the laid back lifestyle and if you want to get involved you can if not you don't have to. Once you get your visa you can go to Bahrain and dubai etc for weekends and there are a lot of females out here who are without their husbands/children
