According to the Saudi Gazette: "Monday, August 26, 2013 8:48 AM Expatriate workers no longer need to carry a printout of their exit and re-entry visas while leaving or returning to the Kingdom from Saay (Sept. 7). [...] According to the new directive, the exit and re-entry visa details on the website ( www.passportevisa.com) will be considered as authentic and final, and as such there is no need to carry a printout." www.saudigazette.com.sa/index.cfm?method=home.regcon&contentid=20130826178252

Thank you for sharing, GW. It was interesting to read the comments at the end of the article. Several people pointed out that airlines and immigration look at the printed visa before letting passengers board flights to KSA. They were saying that, without a printout showing an entry visa to KSA, this could be problematic logistically.

Yes, despite what this says, I'm still going to be carrying the printout with me when travelling by air, for precisely the reason you mention. This really only applies to going through Saudi passport control - and even for them, I'm still going to keep it, just in case.
