I don't think you have to live in Aramco housing, but I am very happy I live in Aramco housing. If you're used to living outside and happy with your life there, then you don't have to move into Aramco compound. I am not sure what the housing allowance is for expats in that situation. Saudis get 3 months basic salary, paid every January.
I would suggest trying to visit the Aramco compound, and see if it's possible for you to drive to Abqaiq and look around. Try to find an Indian family in Abqaiq who you can talk to about the pros and cons of living there. Maybe there's an Indian school in Abqaiq that would be acceptable? if not, maybe you could drop your oldest at school before work? I think you have to make the decision now because it won't be easy to move into the compound once you're living outside. You would have to be on the bidding list and wait until a home opens up and you win the bid.

Non US/Canadians have the option to live off camp.

US/Canadians also have the option, it's just that for them, it's OOP (out of policy) so not covered in the IR Manuals. I know a couple of US employees in our Dept who live off camp.
For all other payrolls it's in policy and covered in the manuals.
