I was wondering if someone could tell me what the internet speeds at rakah are like downstream. I think I read that hooking up the internet takes a long time at other compounds once you move in, but satellite and internet may already be activated in rakah when you move in. Please let me know if that is true.

I just moved at Rakkah and the Internet speed is pretty good. I was told that Rakkah Internet speed is faster than other camps. Also, Internet was already hooked up via a router.

o, I have my visa approved and will be moving to KSA by mid Sept. I have been assigned housing in Rakah. I wanted to confirm if i understood the post by zsb - " Also, Internet was already hooked up via a router" 1) Does this mean that i dont have to bring my modem and router? 2) If I have to what modem and router (name and model) should i bring. 3) I understood from one of the previous posts that Magic Jack works. I would appreciate if i can know if this magic jack is of the newer version that can work independently without the computer. i.e directly connected to the internet jack 4) I am planning to bring my Vonage phone. Has any one been using vonage at Rakah?
I would appreciate your replies.
Thanks AJP

You don't need to bring a wireless router.
I personally don't have Magicjack. I use Vonage, which works perfectly for us. The Vonage box is connected directly to the router using a LAN connection. No computer is needed.

Thanks revive. This means that a wireless router is already provided in the unit.
My laptop will be my only communication tool on day one - so i wanted to make it 100% sure that it will have internet connectivity on day 1.
Thanks. AJP

Actually, internet is available on day 1. The router is connected via fiber optic and should be working when you arrive.

can someone please tell me if Aramco's modem in rakkah is near the main TV location? trying to check if wired internet connected devices will work for the entertainment/tv area or if it has to be wireless if the modem is not close.

touchstone,
Yes, the internet router is located in the same place as the TV connection. I have a smart TV that is connected directly to the router with a LAN cable. Nevertheless, my TV also has a USB wireless modem so I can 'beam' Youtube videos from my iPhone.

My internet in Rakkah has been cutting in and out since I moved in. Also, I can't seem to get my Youtube videos to UPLOAD. Anyone else encounter this kind of problem?

Internet connectivity is pretty good, measured from my iPad to be above 25 MBits with the OOKLA application the day they come to set it up (it was already working before but was an open Wifi, not the password-protected WiFi), but it is lower with an internet speedtest such as bandwidthplace.com (from 3 to 6 MBits).
I just did it gain and I get 7.6 MBits with bandwidthplace.com and 15 MBits with the OOKLA app for iPad.
I tried to communicate via Skype with Belgium, but the connectivity is not good (frozen, highly pixelized video; poor voice quality). I got a better result with Google hangouts, whereas my video received from the other end is excellent, but the video displayed at my end was good, but not excellent.
Finally we tried with Facetime (for Apple aficionados only) and then everything works perfectly.
In any case, the house-internal signal is very strong, since I could make a house tour via Google hangouts, and the quality has been very good in the farthest corner of the home.
Download speed for videos is very good, but if you can not access, it may also depend upon the type of content. The use of a VPN is recommended since otherwise some contents may be blocked. Regarding TV, there are TV cables is several rooms including the living room, the study, the maid room, etc... I visited a home where they have connected a TV set via an apple TV device to their computer and watch TV programs with a Netflix subscription.
There are 60-channels from all other the world available in the home (I have not tired it yet), and you can more channels with an additional subscription; alternatively you can subscribe via internet to the provider of your choice of course, if you can stream it from a PC to your TV set.
