I wanted to know whether layoffs are common in Saudi Aramco especially during recession?

No, they are not common. Has happened over the last 12 years very infrequently. One time a department was being closed, some got jobs in other departments and one time it was contract employees with a contractor, they let them go a year early, I remember another one that was department related also.

Thanks Vpainter for the reply.
How was the situation in Saudi Aramco during the 2008-2009 recession when layoffs were common in the oil industry?

I am not sure if that was the years when they did away with one of the departments, but it did not effect that many people. Usually when something is being closed, the employees are allowed to apply to other jobs in the company and many stay employed. Wasn't that way for the contract company of course. Only once do I know that didn't occur.

Well, yes and no...
Layoffs may not be common...
But the current trend in Aramco tends to be towards joint ventures and outsourcing. A lot depends on what department you will be in. If you're in the production side, you're probably safe. For those of us in support areas...
(I work for SAMSO, the medical branch. In June they signed a joint venture with Johns Hopkins and told us within 3 years some of us would be out of a job, the rest would become joint venture employees and no longer Aramco. Details on pay packages, benefits, etc and the criteria for who stays and who leaves have not been released).

Like so many things in life, the answer is it depends...
A few years ago, we had excess manpower in our area and most of the people found new jobs in our area while some went to different areas. Some took early retirement and some chose to leave the Company.
We are currently outsourcing a function in our area and all the people (Saudi and expats) affected are either taking early retirement or moving to different jobs.
In my experience over the past five years, and from talking to other expats who have been here over 20 years, Saudi Aramco is very fair in these situations...

Like everything, these things tend to go in cycles. There are periods of hiring, followed by periods of lay-offs, interspersed with periods of relative stability.
In my time here I have been laid off (or surplussed, as they call it here) twice, but was lucky enough to get picked up by another dept each time. Other colleagues were not so lucky.
At the moment we seem to be in a hiring period - but nothing lasts forever.

Twofeets...I want to thank you for your contributions to this forum. Your comment about SAMSO makes me a little nervous. If hired by ARAMCO, my husband will be in the medical field. We will be going to Houston this week for orientation and medical. The relocation advisor has told us they would like to have us there by early November. I found out, through these forums, about the joint venture with John Hopkins, but nothing was said about it during the interview. How can we find out more information about this joint venture and what to expect? He has already asked his recruiter, who told him it would only mean good things were going to happen. Should we be concerned about his job security?

Ok, if the new eny may lay some people off, then why the current Aramco management is still posting job ads and interviewing people?
My interview in Houston went very well in September for a consultant position in my specialty within dentistry. I was verbally told to expect something within couple of weeks. My recruiter emailed me yesterday and said the department has asked for an offer to be extended to me, however the offer will not be sent until January after the official initiation of the new eny (John Hopkins Saudi Aramco Medical Service)
I asked if the new eny is considered independent regarding employment, or if Aramco is still the employer, he said the employer for new medical hires will be the new venture, but he isn't sure who is going to handle benefits and payroll. He isn't even sure if housing and schooling will be provided at Aramco camp/schools, not to mention the pay scale at the new venture might be different than what is usually offered by Aramco to Americans!
I'm in a very tough situation because I was planning on leaving my current position anyway in the near future and accept an offer I already have from another major hospital which is awaiting my acceptance. I was willing not to take the existing offer because I know Aramco provide un-matched superb benefits, but now I'm thinking maybe I should accept the other offer since the new eny may not have the same benefits of working for Aramco after all.
Any advice/recommendations out there?
