Years ago when I was very young I moved to Australia for work and I noticed I was very sensitive to colds and other stuff that never affected me here in North America. It got to the point that I needed move away from the north portion of the country.
I was wondering if most of us coming from Canada/US have a tendency to get sick once in KSA. Viruses and bacteria change in every continent. In Western Canada I never get sick, very rare for me to even get a simple cold.
Experiences/comments welcome.

Our family never had as many viruses in the US as we've had here, especially the first year. The kids missed school a lot. It was particularly noticeable when school would resume after long breaks, when families travel all over the world and bring back lots of germs from countries and airports all over. It's like a giant Petri dish in that regard. Also, if you're unused to the climate, heat rashes can be troublesome. You may want to use a neti pot daily for nasal irrigation to avoid viruses. Some expats here swear by them. The hardest thing is to avoid touching surfaces and then yourself, especially your face. Washing hands often and carrying sanitizer is important, obviously. Getting young kids to do that consistently, especially at school and play, is not easily achieved, however. The viruses we've encountered here have been different in terms of symptom order, so we believe they were new to our system as new arrivals. We've also encountered strep more often. This is all anectdotal from our family's perspective. Others will offer their comments, which may or may not echo ours.

I think it is individual to the person/family. Our boys were hardly ever sick here and they were world travelers. We also have not been getting sick very often over the years here and the allergy problems that were awful in the states is not bad here for members of our family.

I haven't been sick any more in Saudi than in the US, which isn't too often. I came over when I was pregnant and didn't get sick right away. I have one daughter who rarely gets sick, and another who gets sick often. It doesn't matter where we are.
The only time I got sick right after traveling was once when arrived to the US for vacation. I think it was very bad food poisoning because I was the only one sick. I was so sick for about 5 days. I couldn't take care of my daughter, and I could hardly get up from the bed.

Our little one is allergic to dust and there is plenty of it in Abqaiq. dust storms almost every week since we have arrived and no 110v vaccum cleaners available to clean the carpets in the house. Everytime we take him out he comes back sick. same with me.. I'm also allergic to dust and have been sick thrice in one month since I have arrived.
The positive thing is that the medical facilities here are fantastic and you can get almost immediate access to doctors and medicines. docs keep telling us that our immune system will develop with time.

The furniture Warehouse usually has vacuum cleaners to loan out. Call them and find out if they have any. Ask your neighbors, they will share until you can get one. At least my neighbors would.

We bought a 220V vacuum cleaner as a second vacuum. It works fine in the 110V outlet, but the suction is a little less than if we plug it into a 220V outlet.

The wareshouse in ABQ dont have vacuum cleaners in the list of items then lend - according to them even DH has stopped lending vaccum cleaners now.
We are using a 220v in the 110 socket at the moment but it doesnt do the job properly! good news is that we have been told that 220v sockets will be activated in our block next week so hopefully it will end the misery!
