We are getting ready to start packing things up for our move and was wondering about children's toys and things. This might not be the right place to post but I can't seem to write a post on the FAQ page. We are scheduled to move to the new compound so I was wondering what others have decided to do about moving their belongings? I know there is a big mall in Dhahran as well as an Ikea, but what about children's stores like toys r us and children's clothing stores. Just wondering how much of their toys and support things like high chair, baby walker, etc to bring. We have a son who just turned 4, a daughter who will be 2 and a new born. Thanks!

The FAQ page is for the moderators and board.
This is the perfect place for your question.
There are toy stores, Toys R Us is across the street from the DHA Mall across from the IKEA store in the Jarir Plaza. This is not the Toys R Us found in the U.S. but does have many toys.
There are baby stores here for baby furniture, but there will not be the selection of models you may be used to. If you want a particular model, you should bring your things.
There are children's clothing stores in the malls and the local community.
Welcome to Aramco! Safe Travels!

Definitely bring your car seats. They're so much more expensive here, and you should be able to bring them as free luggage allowance when you fly over.
You can find all the baby stuff here. There is Toys R US (which does have many of the same toys as in the US, but also has some cheaper made toys you won't find in the US stores), and there's Centerpoint that has some baby items and toys, and also Mothercare is really nice for baby items and clothing.
I would bring whatever baby items you have room to bring. Bring extra toys too if you have room. The prices in Toys R Us are generally higher than the prices in the US. We just paid 139 riyals ($37) for a doll that costs $24.99 (+tax) in the US. And we paid about $77 for a plastic doll house that costs about $30 in the US... This is why we usually buy a lot of toys when we visit the US. I hate overpaying for things....

Greetings....
I was wondering if anyone could chime in and help on the folllowing questions
1) Are ceiling fans recommended to be brought if housing is assigned to Rakkah being that the houses here are newer and I would think this is already provided for
2) Are propane tanks readily available or advised to be shipped for the grill?
Thanks much in advance.

There are no ceiling fans provided anywhere in Aramco.
Propane tanks are available in Khobar and they sell the regulator that fits the tanks here. You will need a hose clamp to put their regulator on the hose to the grill.
Some shippers have allowed brand new never been filled propane tanks if you have bought a new grill. Ours would not.

o laselva, I got your PM. Let me answer your questions here for the benefits of others, as well.
1) Ceiling fans: This is a personal preference. The AC is very cold, so fans are not necessary. We didn't bring any and don't plan to buy one. But if you are used to ceiling fans, by all means bring them.
2) Propane tanks: already answered by VPainter. FYI, we shipped a brand new Weber grill.
3) Master bed/mattresses: we shipped our master bedset just because we have a very nice one. Otherwise, we are very happy with the beds that were provided for us. The kids will continue using the provided beds.
4) Car rental: in our case, we will continue using bus & taxi until we are allowed to buy a car after we get our iqama. Bus service is definitely sufficient for commuting to work. We will need a car to drive/shop around during weekends, and also to transport our kids to various activities around the main camp.
5) Double door fridge: We shipped one. Unfortunately, I don't think it will fit in the kitchen. The problem is the height, not the width. There is a cabinet above the fridge. From floor to the cabinet is about 57" (Note: your house may vary). The Samsung fridge that I shipped is about 59" tall. We will have to figure out what to do after we get our shipment. Possibilities: (1) put the fridge in the maid room located behind the kitchen, or (2) remove / alter the cabinet, or (3) sell the fridge.
6) Sofa recliner: bring it! However, it probably will fit better in the family room rather then the den opposite the kitchen. We brought 2 oversized recliner chairs which we will put in the family room (which we will use as a TV room).

Revive,
I read in one of your posts that TV is not provided. Are there rental TVs available for Rakkah until one can make the trip and buy a TV from a store?
Also now that you are there would you recommend shipping TV from US? Any ideas if it would work with the cable/satellite provided in the house? With or without converter? We have NTSC TVs.
Thanks.

Hi there, Not sure if we can rent a TV. But buying a TV here is very easy. We just bought one last night from a store called Extra (a short taxi ride from Rakkah). It looks like a bigger version of a typical Best Buy store in the U.S. We were pleasantly surprised with the selections and prices. The TV we bought actually costs $150 cheaper than Amazon. Free delivery & installation, too. www.extrastores.com/We did ship a TV from US, but we haven't got our shipment yet so I can't confirm it will work. Are you sure your TVs are NTSCs? Most TVs are multi-system and multi-voltage nowadays.

Getting ready to depart to KSA - 10 days to go. We are assigned to the Rakah compound. I'd appreciate any last minute advise on things that we should bring in the checked luggage.
thank you
