Can anyone please advise regarding using GPS in KSA:
1) Is it better to buy GPS device in USA or in KSA (cost, quality) 2) Many people have mentioned Garmin brand on this forum. Any particular brand recommendations 2) Anyone's experience using google Maps or any other map apps for KSA on smart phone (I-Phone in particular) 3) Finally, do you really need a GPS or a person can easily navigate using Google maps or any other map app on the smart phone.
Thanks, zsb

I have a Garmin that I bought in the States that still has US maps on it, and my wife has it since she is on repat ahead of me and planning a road trip. I also have a Garmin that I bought here that has Middle East and Europe maps on it. They both do the trick. A Garmin bought here and a Garmin bought there work equally well.
I also use my mobile phone navigator which uses google maps. Works like a charm as well.
I have heard that you can buy middle east maps here somewhere if you already have a unit, but I was never able to track that one down.
What you will have to get accustomed to is that nothing here (except Aramco camps) uses street address. You just have to know the approximate location and the crossing streets, or that something is on the such and such road near the Harley shop...or whatever...everything seems to be landmark based.

You can get the Garmin maps directly from Garmin that can download to your GPS. They work quite well and are easy to obtain; just realize you are buying the maps for one unit and if you want them on both units you need to buy the maps twice. The alternative is buying a GPS here with them preloaded, which makes no sense if you already have a GPS.
Alternately, Google Maps works quite well (and is free) although there are lags while driving and it requires you to have your data on which can be problematic if you don't have a good data plan or go to an area with no covee.
