Hi there,
I am on the process of joining Aramco by late July 2013.
Work location will be Dhahram while house location will be Abqaiq.
I am coming with my family (wife and a son 5.5 years old).
I would like to ask about two things:
1. Safety in Abqaiq compound and safety in general within Saudi Arabia for western expats.
I have heard that there was a terrorist attack back in 2006 in Abqaiq compound. Please give some information about the safety! Is 100% safe or we have to be afraid?? also when leaving the compound is that safe to go shopping on nearby cities??
2. What is the situation with the MERC deadly virus which take place very close to Aramco compounds? Is that dangerous???
Your help is much appreciated

Congratulations on your new job! Aramco Coumpounds are all as safe as a place can be. You will be safer here than in New York City or LA or most cities in the states. ABQ compound is safe, there was an attempt on an Aramco place outside the compound, also called ABQ. It was stopped by Aramco security and they did not reach the object of their attack. You will find it quite safe in the local community. Aramco furnishes buses to go into the local communities, no problems. We have been here over 10 years and have never been in a place or situation where we were afraid or felt threatened. We frequent the local communities all the time. The MERC virus has mostly hit within local family units. The medical facilities are taking precautions for anyone entering the medical facilities. Not a problem within the Aramco residential communities. Take precautions for you and your family just as you would where ever you live now if there was a virus/flu outbreak. You don't stop your life, but you do take precautions according to your surroundings - people coughing, crowds, etc. You would probably have a greater need for a particulate mask for the dust storms not to effect you or your family if any of you suffer from asthma or bronchitis. 3M N95 masks work well. They can also be bought here down in the safety equipment souqs in Khobar. If you would like some ABq contacts email me: vpainter29@yahoo.com
