Hi All,
I was wondering about internet usage in the KSA. I am specifically interested in:
-IRC or Internet Relay Chat. Do most clients work from KSA? Is IRC even available? -P2P and Torrent Networks. Both Ares and Utorrent. Gnutella network? -Internet Banking from KSA to North America and the rest of the world. How safe. -How much monitoring the Government does (officially and extraoff plus its relationship with international internet banking and other issues). Topics to avoid to post or even email.
I realize that most of you may not be familiar with some of this stuff but for the geeks there please help me understand.
Thanks in advance!

Torrents works fine but obviously it is frowned upon by the IT Dept. As for IRC, I'm sure it will work as well. Aramco uses a proxy server so certain sites are blocked and you'll figure out which ones they are.
Internet banking is fine. I'm sure most of us here uses it without any issues as well

Thanks azraeil... I was referring to torrents from my own computer, not the company's or anything subjected to the IT guys. I heard IRC is somehow difficult to access...

How about streaming netflix on one's own router? Is that allowed? And you tube watching as well ? What about DVD movies will those be confiscated or will they allow. ?
Thanks New user

You would need a VPN to use Netflix here, it is not available in KSA without one. You can watch most you tube videos here,

I wonder about the following (I don't think they're completely allowed in the Kingdom but not entirely sure).
Facebook (full features) Skype (I heard it will be banned soon) Yahoo Messenger (full features) Whatsapp
Thanks. A.

Don't use any of them so can't tell if 'full features' are available but certainly all of your list is accessible here and frequently used by all.

antemareundae,
All can be used. All on full features as far as I know. I doubt that there are 2 features of Facebook in the first place. Either you can access them or not (like China).
FB, GMail, Skype etc are not accessible from the office.
