o all, I have been offered a position in Aramco with housing in the Dhahran Senior Housing Community. Do you have any picture of that place? What single people do after work besides sports and whatever offered in the compound? What is in Dhahran? i have read that the place is wonderful for families with small children, I would also like to read the comments of single people ...

Hi Vpainter, Is there a Wing Chung (Kung Fu) association? As a licensed hunter in North America, can you bring your rifle or apply for a license there? Will your motorcycle driving license be converted to a Saudi one or do you have to take the full course again? Thanks /Ante.

You cannot bring a rifle to Saudi Arabia and you will not be able to get a gun license here. There was some discussion a while back as to whether expats might be eligible to get gun licenses but as far as I know, nothing came of it and gun ownership is still limited to Saudi citizens.

"Is there a Wing Chung (Kung Fu) association? "
I havent been able to find one. Wing Chung was the last style I took before leaving the US. I have a friend that teaches BJJ in ABQ, there is a karate type school here in RT, but no luck yet for Wing Chung.

o everyone,
The green lights aren't all there yet, but both my husband and I are being considered for work with Aramco although he's further along in the process than I am. I would like to get involved with the community and am glad for the "incomplete list" of groups that Vpainter kindly provided in this forum.
If we move to KSA, I'd be potentially interested in finding contacts or info. about the following groups or activities. (Is it pretty easy to find that once at the compound?) Also if there is the opportunity to study Arabic in a group or class, I may be interested in that also. Also, I don't know if there are many volunteer opportunities available off the compound, but I think that could be of interest as well.
-Quilting Group -Book club -Dhahran Outing Group -Garden Group (maybe) -PAWS (maybe)
Finally, I'm wondering, if we do move, and if I don't end up working for Aramco, is it legal for spouses to do casual work around the compound such as tutoring? I think off compound would need a sponsor, but is a sponsor also needed for on-compound casual work? If not, are there limitations for how much one can work or other guidelines?

There will be a list of all the self-directed groups, including the ones you have listed (except book clubs, they are formed by individual groups - ask around you will find one or form your own) in your home when you arrive, there will be a contact person for each of them.
If both of you have applied for work, Aramco usually, except for couple teachers, hire the husband and the wife will have to come live here first to get a job if possible. There are a few exceptions, but for the wife who works all benefits will come through the husband for you both. You would get vacation time to match your husband. There are adult education classes that you can pay a small fee to take, and there are Arabic classes taught through them.
You can volunteer at the schools, the hospital, PAWS, garden group, women's exchange, and lots of other groups. You will need to learn to say no or your life could be consumed with volunteer work around camp.
Yes, you can be a private tutor. Our friend tutors in her home and tutors in some in the child's home. There are hairdressers, bakers, you do it, you can probably do it here. Could not be something that would cause a problem in the culture. There are craft fairs if you are a crafter.

I was single in Dhahran my first two years in the Kingdom and there is plenty to do both here and in Bahrain. It really depends on what you are interested in doing with your spare time.
Meeting other singles is easy and people are very open and friendly in my experience...

Wow, thanks for the comprehensive list vpainter. I was hoping cricket is being played in aramco.
Is there a cricket ground in any of the compound or do the folks just play in a sports ground?
Since uk and aussies work in aramco, i am sure few of them might follow the sport.
