Hi there, I have an old but extremely reliable VESPA scooter, all metal and with 4 gears, not one of the modern Chinese "rice bowls". Have been using it for 20 years and would love to know if it makes sense to bring it over.
I should say that I am pretty much used to driving in India, Syria, Jordan where things are a bit "wilder" than in the US and the EU, so traffic behavior in KSA is not really an issue for me.
As a bachelor, I will be housed in RT first and then be moved to DHA when something frees up. The question is: to use the scooter inside the compound I guess is no problem. What about OUTSIDE? Do I have to give it Saudi plates, do I need a special license?
Alternatively, I'd leave it here and buy a new vehicle in KSA. How easy or difficult is this to do in terms of paperwork etc? In other countries I lived in, especially the ones with bloated-up bureaucracies, there are "agencies" that do this kind of thing. So the additional question is: in your experience, is KSA easy or complex, and do agencies exist?
Thanks very much indeed!

You do not see many scooters or motorcycles outside the compound in the local community. It would definitely be taking your life out of your hands.
Scooters and motorcycles are ridden on camp.
India, Syria and Jordan are definitely not KSA, which has the highest traffic morality rate in the world. The king is trying on making it safer and has had a little success.

The only people I see using scooters (outside the compound) are the people who make the deliveries for the 'baqalah' (small grocery store/convenience store) which are in each neighborhood. They only drive on the side streets, not on the main streets. It is not safe at all to drive a scooter on the highway or main streets here. People will drive up to 100 km/hr on the main streets in Khobar...
I don't know how it is outside RT, but you cannot drive from Aramco to Khobar with a scooter.
I would suggest buying a small car once you get here.

Wiki Travel describes the drivers here as "homicidal, suicidal and psychopathic". If you try to drive a VESPA on roads off camp you will should make sure you have a good will and life insurance beneficiaries updated. It is also VERY VERY windy and sandstorms are the norm. You and your scooter will be blown off the road in a shamal. Perhaps you can use it to deliver pizzas to us faster on camp - no offense. Buying a car is easy, if you have money you simply walk into a car dealer and buy one or you can buy one from someone selling on camp.

We just bought a minivan from the dealership. My husband went and said it was extremely easy. He had to make two trips only because he went to pick it out, came home to wire the money to our account here, then went to pick up the van. I think if you're paying cash it's easy. I can't comment on financing though.
