www.dhahranpalace.com/ is probably the nearest - big leisure area (pool etc) but the hotel is probably cheap and cheerful (discount for Aramcons as well) Most of the bigger international hotels are in Khobar, which would give you a little commute

Sorry, I should have added that the Dhahran Palace has quite a few different types of rooms - from basic to executive

I hear stienikie hall sux and have not heard about the palace but its easyly the closest to midra tower ( i pass it on the drive thru the gate)

Steineke Hall is fine for what it is - no-one pretends that it is a 5-star hotel. The main advantage to it is obviously its location, inside the Aramco main camp area within walking distance of all the main camp facilities and the core area offices.
It's not so convenient for getting to Al-Midra obviously (not within walking distance) but there are buses to and from the core area.

I am quite confused about whether Steineke Hall is walking distance to the core area or not in the summer months. I have been told that it is a 10 minute walk from Steineke Hall to the core area and others have said it is not walkable in the summer months.
No one seems to mention distance...Is it .5 km? 1 km? 1.5 km? I have lived in the middle east before and have never known anyone to walk more than 100 to 200 meters in the summer heat.

Actually people can walk from Steineke Hall to the Core area even in summer if they so choose. Although, yes it is very hot, it is also walkable. Some people would never walk anywhere in the summer, others still ride their bicycles and walk. So it will be whether or not you want to walk it. It is close to the core area. Walk to the dining hall, go around it and cross the street, walk past the next building and go through the gate and you are in the core area - Admin and Engineering buildings straight ahead.
Now if you work in Al Midra, you would not walk there. You would catch a circuit bus to go there.

The exact distance "as the crow flies" from Steineke to Gate # 34 (the closest entrance gate into the Core Area) is 0.5 km.
Many people do walk that far even in summer - in fact, even some people who drive their cars to work would have to walk nearly that far (or possibly a little further) just to get to and from where they parked their car, especially if you set off a little late - the closest car parks get full quite quickly in the morning.
