Hi all, my husband has been offered a job based in Khurais (pending a medical) and will be away 3-4 nights a week. Is this common? Are there many other wives in this position? I don't want to be lonely, although our six year old daughter is fantastic company The offer letter also states that the housing location is UDH but due to a shortage in UDH, we may be temporarily housed in ABQ until permanent accommodation in UDH becomes available. Are the schools on both camps within walking distance or would I have to drive? Also what are the school terms/semesters please? Wha are the school hours per day? I can see they are three 12 weeks terms/semesters but are there any breaks during each term/semester? Can anyone please recommend a website where I can find out the exact school dates? One more question, I am a working mother at present, is this common in any of the compounds? Once we have settled in, I would be happy for a little part time job paid or unpaid but I don't know how common or easy this is is? Many thanks

I don't know how common it is for husband's to be away all week, but I know some families in that situation.
In UDH, the school is in the middle of the family camp, so it is within walking distance. However, I would recommend you do keep the family car while your husband is away working if possible. That way you can go to the store or clinic or anywhere else in the compound. It's getting really hot now to walk during the day, and if you end up at the far end of the camp, it's a long walk to the commissary.
I am not sure of the exact hours for the school because my oldest is only 4 and in K3 so she goes only from 8 am to 10:45 am.
2013-2014 school calendar: 1st trimester is Aug 31 to December 3 2nd trimester is Dec 7 to March 26 3rd trimester is April 12 to June 25
It looks like there will be the following breaks for students: Sept 21-23 (for Saudi National Day, I think) Oct 12-16 (for Eid Al Adha (Hajj)) - 1 week Dec 21 to Jan 8 Winter Break - 3 weeks March 29 to April 9 Sprink Break - 2 weeks
Sometimes there are part time jobs for dependents, but you just have to wait until one is announced and then apply. You can volunteer to help out with the women's group or any of the other self directed groups. You could also offer English tutoring.

Thanks, UmmRiyam, for providing these dates. My family will be residing in RT. Am I correct to assume that these dates are the same for all the other communities?

mrsyp,
Almost all of the people I know who worked in Khurais are weekend husbands. There is a flight dedicated to them so that will save some time.
The calendars mentioned by some of the members are valid and I'd like to add that the school hours are
Not really sure for the K4 but for
Kindergarten it is 7:45 - 10:30/45 Lunch : 10:30/45 - 12:45PM 12:45PM to 3PM
Grade 1 to 5 7:45 to 3:00 PM with Lunch break from 11:30 to 12:45

Those aren't the current times for the UDH school. The schedule is the same for all schools, but maybe the times aren't. UDH runs from 7:45-11:45 (7:30 for middle school), 1 hour for lunch, and then back from 12:45-3:00. Kindergarten finishes at 2:35.

Hi,
I am offered a position, I am just wondering if there is a day care nursery for the babies. I have a daughter 19 months old and it will be good if there is a day care nursery available in Udhailiyah to send my daughter to during the daytime, for few hours.
Any response in this regard is appreciated.
Thanks Nadeem Khan

There isn't a daycare facility here, but there are a few women who do offer babysitting/daycare in their home.
