Can anyone explain the difference between living in Abqaiq vs. Dhahran? Pros and Cons from current staff (family/single) would be appreciated. Are new hires automatically assigned to Abqaiq as housing in Dhahran is full (true/false)?

You will have to refer to the IR manual for the rules related to your specific payroll, US, GBP, Euro etc. In my department only US payroll automatically gets housing in Dhahran. So you will have situations where people on the same job levels will be segregated based on nationality.

Well, it would really depend on where you are working. If you are working in Dhahran, it would be preferable on almost every level, to live in Dhahran, if you were given a choice (which you generally, are not). Even if you were given a choice, I can't think of almost any reason why a person working in Dhahran would choose to live in Abqaiq instead.
Dhahran housing is never full (it physically can never be, as some houses are always being renovated and some are always kept available for urgent situations) but it is probably fuller than it has been in a long, long time, so housing there is very much at a premium. So while it is not true to say that all new hires are automatically assigned to Abqaiq, it is certainly a lot more difficult these days to get housing in Dhahran than it used to be at some times in the past.
If you are working in Dhahran but are not assigned housing there, the next most likely housing assignment would probably be Abqaiq (it could theoretically be Ras Tanura, but I believe there is less availability there than in Abqaiq, based on recent posts here).
According to info posted on here, the company has recently acquired a compound in Al Khobar (Jadawell compound) but I do not know that it is ready for anyone to move into yet

You can get on the bid list as soon as it is allowed and bid on a place in Dhahran. Lots of people on the bid list so not easy to get a house through that system, but possible if you are not picky about the house you get.

Bidding for a house in DH after 2 years of ABQ is it allowed/possible? Been reading this forum that such alternative is NOT possible; bidding is allowed only for the camp you've been allocated even if you're working in DH. A friend of mine which returned home told me that a RT guy was allowed to move to DH with his family due to serious health problems only. On the other hand candidates with family status & GC 15+ only (Euro/GBP payroll) are granted to live within ABQ SA compound. For Same category but with GC 11-13 the company does NOT grant a house within ABQ SA compound, candidate & family having the option to live inside (if housing available) or outside, housing allowance being granted, within SA policies. At least this is written in my papers.

Clarifying that the drive is about 1.5 hours each way. In case someone read it as I did at first that you had a 3 hour drive both ways.

I'm a new hire and I've been told by some that they're confused I've been told I'd commute as a GC14; is that true?
