Departure date is fast approaching. We went today to look at Vonage systems and the first question I was asked stumped me. Can some one tell me type internet available in Dhahran. Is it cable or DSL. Evidently the vonage boxes are different. Also I read where cordless phones are prohibited. (REALLY) so no one has cordless phones in the KSA. Do I risk bringing in cordless phones or do I buy them there? Reason I ask is vonage has a package with phones included.
Thanks again for any help Ben

According to the vonage web site and a live chat I just had with the sales rep from vonage, there is no difference between the boxes used (which makes sense as you're going to plug it into the router and not directly from the Cable/DSL box.
I bought ours off the vonage website.

Hi. We have DSL. We hand carried over a set of Vonage cordless phones, with US phone number already set up on it. Our Vonage came with three hand units. We bought them at Walmart, I believe. The Vonage box sits right next to our wireless box, as it is plugged into it. We have the cordless extensions scattered throughout the house, and have never had a problem with them. There was no incident getting them through customs.
Also, after we arrived, we mail ordered a set of cordless phones with digital answering machine for our house land line. These were shipped over via Aramex and delivered to us without any issue.

Bring your phones in your suitcase. You are going to want them before everything else shows up.

We got just the vonage box off the website and, like others, have it set up here at home before we move over so any issues etc. can rectified immediately via web chat etc.
The box itself was free with free shipping so there was no cost up front for us. We have a couple of sets of cordless phones that we are bringing with us in our suitcase as suggested and we've tested out the vonage box with them already so know they work. I believe the plans are different here in Canada vs Vonage US so best to go online and sign up for the plan that suits your needs (international / US / Mexico calling plans etc.)

I'm looking at getting a Vonage box before I head over to Saudi Arabia this summer. I currently live in Houston. Should I sign up for a US domestic plan in the US and then take the Vonage system over to Saudi Arabia or should I sign up for an International plan?

Any Vonage plan you get will work wherever you are in the world. You just need to choose the plan that best covers the countries you want to call. If you only want to call the US, you would get the plan that covers calls to the US (and Canada?) only.
If you want to be able to call other countries and not pay by the minute, you can choose a different plan. Whichever plan you choose, you can call anywhere in the world, it just depends on whether you want unlimited calls to a particular destination or not.

If you're coming from Texas, I presume the bulk of your calls will be to/from the US, no? Your phone number you are signing up for will be a US area code, probably one you select that appeals to you. If your primary calls are to/from the US and Canada, you won't need an international plan because you'll have a US number and so will your callers on the other end. If you're calling other countries, then you'll want to look into other options or minute rates for that particular country. Vonage has many options. They also have a lot of digital features, which are great, particularly when you're traveling and don't want to miss any calls.
You should activate your plan and select your phone number, set up auto payment, etc. before you leave Houston, and hand carry your Vonage hardware in your luggage. Once it's activated, you're good to go, no matter where in the world you may plug it in.
