Hi,
just wondering where (or who) families living here go to order a birthday cake. Our older child turns 13 a few days (5 actually) after we arrive in SA and we'd like to have a birthday cake to "celebrate" with.

There may be some bakers in your camp that can make a specialty birthday cake for you. I am not sure what bakeries are around RT or Khobar, but I think you can get cakes from Baskin Robbins and Dairy Queen and there's also cheesecake factory in Alrashed mall (but don't think they can add 'happy birthday' to it).

Not sure about RT, but the Saadedin (sp?!) bakery counter at the commissary in Dhahran does birthday cakes with writing. They told me they do photos, too, but I haven't investigated. There are also resident ladies who bake and do professional level decorating. They are found via the Women's Group newsletters sometimes, and word of mouth.

Hopefully one of these ladies will be able to take our order at such short notice, if not, Baskin Robbins/Dairy Queen will have to do. I appreciate you getting back to me, Hadia, UmmRiyam. Thank you very much.

To be honest, we've bought cakes at various places and I've yet to find anywhere that does better cakes (including birthday cakes) than the Saadeddin bakery counter in the Aramco commissary in Dhahran. According to their site, they have a branch in Ras Tanura.

Not Ras Tanura, but off camp in Rahima.
