I heard today from someone in the personnel department at the Al Midra building that you can not sell an imprted car in the Saudi market after you decide to leave the KSA because your car does not have a KSA VIN number, in other words you need to ship the car back to the US. It is difficult for me to believe this story since my custom agent in Dammam is totally unaware of such regulation. Can someone in the forum please tell if you know someone who sold an imported car in the KSA market? Do you need a minimum amount of time with your imported car prior to sell it? Can you import more than one vehicle?
Thanks

you can search the interior ministry website for custom regulations. but yes, an imported vehicle cannot be sold for the next 3 years. this is a common info.. weird if your agent doesnt know about this.

Well, that's not quite the same thing - the OP was reporting having been told that an imported vehicle could never be sold, and had to be shipped back to the US on leaving the kingdom. The customs agent was saying he was not aware of this regulation, which would appear to be correct since, according to your post, imported vehicles can be sold (after 3 years).

Hi all,
We hope to arrive in DHA around April 2013 and I have a question about importing a vehicle. We have a 2013 Ford Explorer and are thinking about paying it off and bringing it to Saudi Arabia. Does anyone know if there is a Ford dealership in the area and do they honor the factory warranty if there are any problems with my vehicle while we are there? If not, perhaps it makes more sense to buy one in Saudi? Thank you.

Yes there is a Ford dealership here, but I dont know if they honor the warranty. Perhaps you can check with Ford. They should be able to tell you if its covered here.
As to buy here vs import, its up to you. For new cars you can get some good deals here. For used cars my wife and I decided to buy one in the US and ship it here. Ive heard compelling arguments on both sides.

We shipped our Chrysler Town & Country mini van. Any warranties are not honored and we had purchased an extended warranty when we purchased the vehicle; however, since we had to cancel they did prorated the un-used portion & refunded it back to us. May want to check on any purchased extended warranties. Some good news at least for Chryslers any recalls for the vehicle are honored at the Bahrain Chrysler service department...not sure if they are honored in Saudi as we found the service center in Bahrain to be more customer friendly so we take our vehicle there to be serviced.

My buddy is an Engineer with Ford and he looked into the warranty question for me, see below:
I am told by our warranty rep; The rule is that vehicles shipped into the country assume the same covee offered in the local market. Saudi has 3year 60,000 KM warranty covee so that what would apply to the Explorer shipped into the country. But let me tell you about Saudi Arabia (Middle East) unique market conditions and requirements that your friend may want to consider;
- There is a special powertrain calibration for Middle East. This calibration supports A/C performance. There is higher demand for cooling in GCC countries. Special engineering tool required locally to update PCM module. Local FSE can assist dealer.
One more thing, radio frequency in Saudi Arabia follow EU setting. You may have problem with station selection and storing.
This is just additional information to consider when making this decision.
Cheers!
