Out of curiosity, is it appropriate to wish a (potential, Saudi) supervisor a Happy New Year in e-mail correspondence? Does it depend on the person? (I'm thinking, here, of the difference between the Islamic and Gregorian calendars).
Thanks, CP

I guess it may depend on the person, but all the Saudis I work with wished me a Happy New Year and many wished us a Merry Christmas. Since the New Year isnt a religious holiday i cant see where it would be a big issue.

While it's true that most Saudis will wish you a Happy New Year on the occasion of the Gregorian New Year (and some, as mentioned, will also wish you a Merry Christmas), I'm not sure it would be appropriate to wish a Saudi a Happy New Year at this time, since it's not their New Year. They probably wouldn't be offended by it, it just seems to me it would be a little incongruous.
If I could make a slightly strained ogy, it would be somewhat akin to wishing someone Happy Birthday, when it's not in fact, their birthday.

Thank you, both. Silly question, perhaps, but I think your responses helped me to forgo the potential faux pas.
Thank you, and Happy Birthday, Grove... CP
