On the other hand, one of the benefits of living and working here is that expats from North America are well compensated and the dollar goes far here. For our family, it is one of life's sweet rewards that we can, and do choose to, tip generously people like porters and domestic helpers, people trying to se by. Being in the Kingdom, you quickly and easily get sucked into the lifestyle of always having someone around willing to do the physical part of life if you don't want to do it. At the airport, those guys deserve a decent tip when they have to heft my stuff, LOL.

I agree with you, Hadia. But we are speaking of first time arrivals. Some new people have been or are running on empty with regards to their bank accounts when they arrive, we were when we arrived. At this point the tips need to be inline with local customs, Saudis pay 5 SR/bag, 10 SR is double. The generous tips before you are established as an Aramcon may be a hardship when you first arrive. You are not being paid that generous salary when you first arrive, that comes later and then one can be very generous in their tipping.

I'll grant you that. The new arrival experience is rather recent for us, so I understand what you are saying.

Thank you for all that advice, I have just gone and got some Saudi Riyals and some USD. The packers were here today packing everything up and tomorrow they come finish and take it all away. It just occured to me this evening, do I tip the packers? This is the first time I have ever had movers and it is fantastic! :-) They have been so great I was thinking maybe I should be tipping them, is this something that is usual or expected? How much would be appropriate, there are 3 people?

RE: Tipping Movers. It's your call. We liked ours also. We gave them $50 each. We were mostly packed but they were responsible for the furniture.

Hi,
**Is it currently okay to tip 5-10 SR per bag you get help with when initially arriving at the airport? Thanks for the tip to settle the price up front.
**Is the current typical tipping amount in Saudi restaurants 10-15%?
Thank you!
Another previous comment on this thread: "And don't believe the airport porters who say its 100SR for taking your luggage off the conveyor belt, through customs and out to your car. You should pay 5 to 10 SR per piece of luggage or boxes. When you are exchanging money try to get some small bills as needed, depending on the amount of luggage you have. Settle the price to pay up front, they may still try to get more from you once you are at your car. Pay them the appropriate amount and get in your car and leave."
