Hi, All!
I will be arriving in Saudi in a couple of weeks with a 3 1/2 & 5 1/2 year old. I have car seats that I originally thought I would strap into the aircraft seats, but am thinking at their age they might benefit from having more room to move by sitting directly in the aircraft seats without their car seats. We will be flying Lufthansa connecting through Frankfurt and I'm concerned about losing the car seats enroute. I do not want my kids to ride in the car without their seats.
Any thoughts on how best to handle this or personal experiences would be most appreciated!
Thanks,
SGrace

Hi, I've flown with my kids several times over the years through infancy, toddlerhood and beyond. I strongly recommend that you check the car seats with your luggage. I've never been charged for this. Some airlines have plastic bags they'll put your car seat in, or you can buy one at a baby supply store. My experience has been that it's best to have a small, easily foldable stroller that I would gate-check at the plane door. It would be open and waiting for me when I got off the plane (usually open  ). At 3 and 5, my kids would have been wailing about the long walk through airports and in passport control lines. When traveling with them at that age, the stroller was a base of operations for them and a place to rest some of the carry-ons. I'm not sure if airlines even allow you to put toddler car seats in the plane's seat anyway. I could have sworn I'd read on one of their sites that you can't, but I may be mistaken. I'm not sure what you'd be accomplishing by using it there except restricting your child's comfort. If you check the car seats with your baggage, it's easy to collect them for the taxi ride to wherever. Those things are bulky and heavy and I sure wouldn't want to carry one through airports and security.
When my kids were the age of yours, I also made it a practice to buy some new toys, small but interesting hand toys that did not make noise, and not show the toys to the kids until on the plane. Same thing with special treat snacks. Even now, I insist the kids all travel with their own small pillow and blanket so they can get comfortable with their own things from home.
BTW, our relocation flight was on Lufthansa, and they were AWESOME with our kids. Great experience, start to finish.

Be advised Lufthansa just canceled 1200 flights ahead of nationwide strike by cabin crew union. You will need to keep an eye on this.

www.apartmenttherapy.com/allinon ... ller-51030 I have this one, and this is FAA approved for use in airline. You can't use one that's not FAA approved. Unfortunately, I bought mine used, and there was no tag to prove it. If I knew about that issue, I would have brought a print out that this model is FAA approved and it would have been ok. So, they took it away to go into baggage. Although a little later on, we saw a family brought theirs in with no problem (same model with mine). The only reason I was going to bring this into the airplane was for my 2 yr old that sleeps really well in it. Your children are older than mine, I think they will enjoy to seat on the airplane seat.
