I'm amazed no one really posts here - surely people out there travel around Saudi on a regular basis? Anyway, there's lots of nice things to see out there so please feel free to travel around Saudi as much as you can. Camping in the desert, diving in the sea, climbing in the mountains - it's all possible here. Taif & Abha are nice mountain towns with cooler weather, more greenery and cable cars up and down the mountains. Jeddah is a great shopping city with a great old souq and the Red Sea on your doorstep. Riyadh has many facilities with the Kingdom Tower giving great views over the city. Mada'in Saleh & Al Ula is very similar to Petra in Jordan - amazing place. Tabuk & Tayma have some great antiquities. www.sauditourism.com.sa/en/Enjoy Buster

Lots of people travel all over Saudi. They just don't post it here and are not getting on the forum. Most people who live here have so many other outlets to share information, the forum has never before been used by people living here until recently.
Even today, most of the forum usage is possible new hires who are seeking information to help make a decision to come here and new hires seeking information on moving here.

What about traveling to places n the kingdom if one is a Muslim, do they have to get a special permission to visit these sites?

If you are Muslim, it will say that on your iqama. There are checkpoints when driving into Makkah, so you may have to show your ID. As far as I know, you don't need any special permission to go to Makkah or Madinah. BUT, I believe you do need to register if you plan to go to Hajj. I haven't been yet, but it's my understanding that Saudis and iqama holders can only go to Hajj once every 5 years.

UmmRiyam, True, but it seems to be a rule that is "more honoured in the breach than the observance."

Hi,
I was told by my relocation advisor that Aramco personel might be able to travel for free in the Aramco airplanes accross SA if seating is available, is this true? Does anyone have experience with this?
Thanks

Yes that is true. There is online booking for the flights. We have never flown through Aramco. I think there are certain days that are only for the employees and other days that the families can fly too.

You also have to be prepared that you can be bumped at any time if VIP's need the plane. You would then need to get back on your own if you had to go to work.

Thanks all, just one of many perks at SA. We are very exited about the opportunity and just the medical and visa stage away.....

Do I understand things correctly in that we (Aramco employees and our families) are able to travel for free on Aramco bus shuttles to/from each operating base/camp? We will be based in Rakkah, and would love to visit Riyadh, Jeddah, etc. Can we do so for free on those buses?

I don't think Aramco has regular buses that travel to Riyadh or Jeddah. Riyadh is about 4 hours drive from Dhahran. Jeddah is probably at least 12 hours drive from Dhahran.
As mentioned above, Aramco does have regular flights to both Riyadh and Jeddah, but seats depend on availability, and like vpainter mentioned, you can easily be bumped from the flight if a VIP needs to fly.
You can book flights on Saudi Airlines. The rates are very reasonable, and there are many options for flight times. Also, there's another airline called Nas, but I haven't used them.
