Hi All - Can anyone describe to me the process to bring my dog (golden retreiver) with me and family on the initial move? The complex part is that I'm an American on a separate expat assignment in europe, so even though a "US hire" we'll (family status) be relocating to KSA from Europe.
I've asked the US relocation adviser many times for any general info, comparable to what's contained in the US relo-guide (I imagine there is an equivalent section for the European relo-guide), but this is apparently to challenging for them to manage.
I've also contacted a pet relocation service and they've indicated that I can't bring my pet in until I have my iqama.
Are there any recent arrivals who brought their furry family member with them on the initial move? Please share the process. Or would anyone be willing to scan and send me the pet-portion of the European relo-guide?

I am not sure how it will work from Europe but from the U.S here is the process.
Okay the process for bringing in a dog isn't hard it is just time consuming and a lot of waiting. There are places that will charge you thousands to do it but you can do it yourself. I did. 1. Go to the vet, make sure you are current on all shots, get rabies again even if they just had it. It has to have been given with in the last month. Get a letter stating that the dog is going to be a guard dog. 2. Send all of that to the USDA for certification. 3. Send all of that to the State Department 4. Get husband to get pet import here in Saudi or relo agent if you are not here yet. NO you do not need your igama first!!! 5. Send everything to the Saudi Consulate 6. Less than one month before leaving get another rabies shot 7. Send that to the USDA for certification- again! (This is all the airline wants and it has to be less than a month old) 8. Take everything to the airport. The airline wants the last USDA cert. Saudi will ask for the pet import. Why they make you jump through all the other hoops I am not sure.
Good Luck!! The list of banded dogs changes daily. We brought in our two dogs 18 months ago and one of them (German Shepard) is now on the banded list. Got love it!

Hi Julz62,
Thanks for your list of steps, insights, and encouement for a USA->KSA relocation. Unfortunately here in Italy the bureaucracy, stamps, and list of agencies is mind-boggling; coupled with our lack of Italian language skill, I'm starting to worry our golden retriever wont be able to join us on the initial move. I've emailed the Saudi consulate in Rome for information.
To clarify point 4, your US-based Aramco relocation agent took care of obtaining the pet import permit for you OR did you do a 'delayed family' relocation and your spouse obtained the import permit in Saudi?
Are your dogs having a good time there (I assume your within the Dhahran compound)?
Thanks again!

I came on delayed status so my husband got the permit for us. I am sending you a PM. There are ways to get that without being in Saudi.

Julz, could you share that PM with me as well. I am interested in accomplishing this from Saudi as well with as little on effort on my wife's part as possible. She is going to be coming over on delayed status as well and will have many other things on her plate.

Thanks very much for this posting. I did get a quote and I was surprised at the price. I do imagine they do things very eficiently and smoothly. We are going through the last steps of the hiring process ( VISAS), our plan is to come sometime in 10/2012 and we are deciding on taking our dog ( Lab retriever) . I've read your instructions and they are really helpful as I am planning on doing this process myself. I do have a question that I cannot find the answer to: How can we get an import permit if we are all in the US ? From what I have read, one has to be in Saudi Arabia to request it ? Any tip, hint or help will be very appreciated. greensprings

Hi - Do a search under 'pets' on the forum and you will see some other discussions about bringing dogs in to KSA. Small dogs are a problem - larger dogs not so much, from what I have learned.

Greenspring. Here is what you need for the pet permit from this side. email: dr.edreess@moa.gov.sa and or dmqmoa@hotmail.comKing Fahad Airport quarantine (cargo) 883 6900 you need to send them a picture of the animal, you Iqama/passport if you dont have an Iqama yet and the health card. He says he will scan you a copy of the paperwork and then leave the originals with the Dammam vet at the airport. You will then meet with the vet when you enter the airport and he will inspect the animal and open the original paperwork! PM if you have questions.

Could someone please tell me if a microchip is required for dogs coming into KSA? Also, is the maker and lot# required for all the vaccines or just the rabies? Many thanks

One more ? Has anyone shipped a dog without being on the flight. My husband is currently in the Dhahran camp and I am in Texas. I would like to ship our dog before my departure. This seems to require some additional coordination with the airline that is different than if he were to fly with me. Please pm me as I have questions about the pick up process at the airport in Dammam.
thanks

A microchip is required. As far as bringing it in without you, you will have to use a pet import service which is significantly more!! Better to bring them with you on the plane as excessive baggage.

Thank you so much for the reply on the microchip! One last ? for clarification, does the health certificate that is sent for the import permit require the USDA and state department certification?

Hi
My dog has just arrived with us from Scotland, we contact a Pet Relocation service to do ALL stuff our side and on the Saudi side we contacted Purrfect pets in Khobar, which is near Dharan and abour 50 mins from RT, where we are.The vet at purrfect pets is named Achmed(probs wrong spelling, sorry) he got the import certificate, we sent a pic of the dog(er Spanial), and within days had the certificate, that was no problem, things got held up at our end with the saudi embassy in London for the stamp of paperwork, so we ended up having 2 flights cancelled, we at the time were in Saudi, this was a pain but no real hassle as he was getting weel looked after in the kennels. Bcause the flights were cancelled our import certificate ran out (it only lasts 30 days), so therefore Achmed applied for another for a small charge, think about 100 pound, not to sure though, again this only took days. I would say the hardest part with the 2 companies exchanging details were the launguage barrier, just be patient it pays off, if you need any advice, a few other wee things I could let you know, just PM me. Maybe your already here if you are hope it went well.

Hi could you explain this process, find it complicated and bit worrying, I know people have done this as it is cheaper, it cost me £2200 to bring my dog through a pet relocation service, would like to take him home for summer, but cant afford these costs again. Many thanks.
