Hi there,
Wondered if someone could explain the American grading system for schooling. We have just received confirmation of the grades the children will enter on arrival for the 2012/2013 academic year...
Son aged 7, quite bright, no problems or concerns at school: will be 8 in September -currently uk year 2 will go into grade 2
Daughter aged 10, struggles with Maths, probably middle to bottom third of her class, will be11 in January 2013, currently uk year 5 to go into grade 4.
Do these grades sound right to people who have experience of theAmerican schooling system? At the moment they are 3 school years apart in ARAMCO school they will be 2 school years apart. If I'm honest dont think it would hurt my daughter to be in a lower year if it helps her to progress and give her more confidence in her learning. but wondered what the norm was.
Many thanks in advance

Hi,
Your daughter should be entering 5th grade in september, so if for whatever reason she is entering 4th grade she will be with the age group a year younger than her

Hi Sayers. Congratulations on your progress. Your children will thrive and have the time of their lives at the Aramco Schools. It's like nothing you can imagine until you experience it.
I agree with Gareth about your daughter's grade, however, I don't have personal experience in transferring children from the UK system. We came from the States and our children matriculated into the classes we anticipated.
Now, it is my understanding that in most instances, students are placed in the grade that corresponds to their age group, and the cutoff date for birthdays in the Aramco Schoos is August 31. In other words, to start kindergarten, you'd have to be 5 by August 31; to start 1st grade, you'd have to be 6 by August 31. Following in that vein, a child who is 10 on August 31 would align with grade 5.
If it were me, I'd email the principal to clarify the issues of age and British-to-US school transfer and grade alignment. First, however, I'd discuss with the relocation advisor, because mistakes on the employment forms do occur, particularly with so many human hands touching documents and working with the information on them.

Thanks for your help and advice. Contacted our relocation adviser and just had a message back to confirm our daughter will go into Grade 5.
