What about tobacco use? What types are available - is it common in the workplace? Is there a smoking area? In general, what are the atudes towards smoking and can cigarettes, chew tobacco, etc be purchase inside a community compound?

No smoking inside the buildings, though you may smoke outside. You can find LOTS of tobacco products EVERYWHERE.

You should also be aware that there is no smoking (or eating, or drinking) allowed in public during the month of Ramadhan.
And if you are in a clinic or hospital area, there is no smoking allowed inside or outside the buildings (at least in Dhahran and Ras Tanura, probably the others too) - there is a "smoke-free zone" surrounding the entire clinic/hospital area.

What about Hookah? Are there places to smoke that recreationally? In the states Hookah Lounges are sprouting up all over the place. Didn't know if they had anything like that within the compounds. Being a female smoking in any sort of "hookah lounge" I am sure would not be allowed.

You can buy a hookah pipe and smoke in the privacy of your own home.
