I thought I would pass this along as I experienced it today in Dhahran. I just joined Aramco and am living in Dhahran.
My original plan was to use my American ATM card or personal check cashing procedure and not open a local bank account. As a part of the drivers license process, the license fee must be paid at the bank branch on camp. It now means that you have to have a bank account with or without an ATM card. This only applies to males since this refers to driver's licenses.
I was also told that an alternative was to have one my colleagues, who has an account with the bank, to pay the fee for the license.
The bank said that this process changed two weeks ago. This is what I was told by the bank and they may or may not be giving me the entire story. I then told them I will open a bank account with the minimum deposit requirement. After paying the license fee, I told them I wanted to close the account. They looked at me strangely and told me I had to wait a few days.
WELCOME TO SAUDI ARABIA!

Funny thing is that my job involves process improvements. lol. In all fairness, I have seen many processes that have impressed me and would be an improvement in the USA. However, I have encountered major head scratchers here.

I guess the process is different on the west coast. I just got my license last week (in Jeddah) and it took 45 mins tops! Btw, I didn't even have a bank account yet. What really helped was the "expediter" personnel arranged for me. Still had to pay the relevant fees though.

For driver's license I used FIFA and they accepted cash payment. It was in 2010 though.

I confirmed with my Admin today along with FIFA. For the Eastern Region, payment can only be made through a bank and you must have an account with that bank or a friend have an account. Previously, you could pay through FIFA.

Hi All, Giving myself the same excuse as the rest of the newbies, i have a question here not a reply..
What is done most when it comes to opening a bank account in SA. Is it reaquired for this drivers license or not?
Second, is it better to have your salary paid into your account in your home country and transact in SA with that ATM and draw cash etc, or have it paid into a newly opened account in SA?
Any South Africans out there in the forum?
