My friend who's already living in KSA has accepted a job with Aramco in Dhahran. He's currently located in Jeddah and Aramco is offering to pay to move his personal effects to Dhahran (overland by truck). He doesn't have much furniture as his old company provided furnished accomodation. Aramco will cover 760kg worth of personal belongings to ship by truck.
This 760kg is confusing him. How can he know the volume/size of this? Is there anyway to estimate the weight from the size or type of object (e.g., books, coffee table, clothing, bicycle, knick knacks, etc.). Is there an online chart that estimates weights (or shipping weights) for these objects?

In my case moving from USA, the shipper performed a pre-ship survey with a program on their smart phone. They punched in the number of items, type of item, etc. within reason (eg. not every book or toy). They did this for the eBox and ocean shipment. This is only an estimate. For me, actual weight was less than the estimated weights. eBox was around 30 lbs less (packer weighed on a bathroom scale that I was placing in the eBox) and the ocean shipment was around 800 lbs less. Not the best estimate in the world but is difficult to do. I would think that 760 kgs would be sufficient if your friend hardly has any furniture and minimal books. If I recall correctly, the ovee price I would have had to pay was US$1.20 per pounds. In reality, I should have packed more! lol. However, sort of a moot point as I would not have had the space or stoe room for more and selling it initially probably would have been time consuming and a nuisance.
