I've not heard the bit about working four months and then having to take two weeks off.

It is a very tight, year-round teaching schedule at the ITCs, unlike the schools for children that don't have classes for two months of the summer. The students and classes change constantly in a rolling schedule fashion, all year. You would have to discuss with your supervisor whether four weeks in one leave would work for your department's schedule.
