o, We are considering a potential job offer from Saudi Aramco. We would just like to know, before we continue, if there are English Special Needs Schools in Saudi Arabia? Our 7 year old son has autism and he cannot be integrated into a mainstream school. He needs to go to a specialized school for special needs children. Any info would be helpful. We do not know yet in which city the job is located. We are simply doing our research in advance. Thanks in advance.

The Aramco schools do not have any special needs provision. I don't know of any schools in the kingdom that provide for special needs. Hopefully, someone else will know for sure.

I have found a school called Dhahran School for Special Needs Children on the internet but they do not have a website. I am emailing some schools in the area to see if they heard of any. I am sure there must be special needs schools there. I was reading about the Saudi government's recent commitment to autism awareness in the country and in providing services. If you hear of anything, please let me know, thank you.

Unfortunately I don't believe you would be offered family status as one of the conditions to be on family status is that your children be accepted into the Aramco school system. Home schooling is not an option-although some have received an exception to policy (main reason is that they have home schooled their children from the start).
My husband know some Saudi co-worker that have a special needs children and they live in Bahrain as the special needs school are better there or they have their child in a boarding type school for special needs children. But I don't think that would be an option for an expat???
You may want to bring this up with your relocation person and see what they have to say.

Dear BolishFamily,
I thought I read somewhere that Saudi Aramco offers the choice of sending children to schools outside the Aramco schools, such as International schools. This is something we seriously have to look at. Thanks for your input and any further information would be helpful.

I found these. I know when we were in Qatar we could not find many special needs schools over the internet, but sure enough we found a good school for our son there. I hope this will work out!

jeiorio,
You need to check with your adviser with regards to this issue. I know of a couple of families who had to leave their disabled child (down syndrome or learning disability) behind in their home country while others managed to get them in and send them to one of the special needs school. I know of one family who sent their child to Bahrain and another family who sent his son to a special school near Dana (not too far from the Dhahran compound) called Aliya School if I am not mistaken. Both received EAP (Education Assistance) from Aramco in sending their child to these schools.

Thank you all so much for your input. We will discuss this with our advisor if an offer is made (we should know more this week). Before we make any move, the most important thing for us to find a school for our children. I am not worried about my daughter finding a school, she can attend a mainstream school, it is my son that has the challenge of having a disability so as long as we can take care of him, we are ready to go!

I understand that Aramco schools do not have any special needs provision but I guess that this is only applicable for children with severe disabilities. My son had speech language delay but he is completely high functioning and has always attended regular school. He is now 8 years old (Grade 2) and the school provides speech therapies and an educational assistant (basically to help him remain focused in class). Would he be accepted in Aramco schools? And if so would they provide any kind of additional support (like speech therapy or educational assistant)? I am in the early stages of the hiring process and would like to know what to expect... Thanks so much in advance.

As far as I know, Aramco schools do have speech therapy, but they do not have any other special education assistants.

o jeiorio if you are still on the forum then you must have moved by now to Saudi. we are in the process of moving aswell and we too have a child with additional needs. Could you give me some guidance as to what your experience has been so far whether you found a good proper school for your child. We live in the UK and schools and therapies over here are excellent. you have given a nice long list of schools but is any one of them any good? some one has also said that special schools are no where near as good as special schools in the west. Please do reply if you'r on the forum

whz: There are not any schools in the Dammam/Dhahran/Al Khobar area that caters for children with special needs. The closest special school is The Children's Academy in Bahrain.
There are a couple of other schools in Bahrain that may accept your child depending on what kind of special need he/she requires.
