As a new hire I assume I would arrive and have no telephone in the house. What happens about intenet from Week one and even from day 1? As the internet is very commonplace thesedays it would be important for communicating to family back home and my hobby( stockmarket).
Could people discuss what the realities are from arriving on day 1 please. I have heard that you can buy a wireless modem that fits into a usb port and get ok covee...
Thanks.

There will be a phone in your home....the usage will be deducted from your pay (and there will be instructions on calling long distance...etc). You'll have to request for internet service, that will take anywhere from a few days to a week or more (insh), and again, you'll have instructions on that as well. Anyone else what to chime in??

Once you have a login id, you should be able to use the dial-up which is free. ADSL request will probably take 2-3 weeks or even longer.
If you are lucky and manage to get a house with Fibre Optic (Dhahran Hills area only), then the activation will probably be faster.

Various posts on different threads have alluded to a USB dongle being given to new hires - I just checked with our new secretary who arrived a couple of months ago and she confirmed that she received one and was able to use the Internet on her laptop from day one.
However, depending on usage, it may not last too long so you probably want to be fairly frugal with it (avoid too much media streaming, for instance) until you get your ADSL or fiber optic set up which as Azraeil says, may take up to a couple of weeks. Our secretary got it within ten days, although she didn't actually apply for it for over a week and they installed it two days after her request was approved in the system.
The main delay in her case was in getting the SAP CRM account which is necessary to submit the request.

We were told at the induction that the USB is not offered any more and we would need to wait till either the dial up or the broadband is connected, however we could still check mail from office so few nights without internet won’t have an impact.

Or you would be better off if you bring the internet USB (make sure it is unlocked) with you and then only buy what they call here data sim card, slot it in the USB internet stick you ve got and you will be up an running in no time.
