FYI, for those who want to leave ADSL behind...and use a 3G router (purchase in Khobar) which usually takes normal size SIM card (you can get an adapter for micro-SIM or just ask for full-size SIM).
I have tested near the Hills school using an external eternal (attached directly to 3G router - not something mounted external to house).
Zain - no signal; seems to be in a null spot between towers STC - only Edge speeds (i.e. slow) Mobily - 3G signal resulting in about 8mbps down/2mbps up
Cost is about $90 USD per month for unlimited with Mobily. Not a great deal, but given how slow the ADSL is, I don't feel the $40 is a value.
Your mileage may vary.

Just bring your computers.
As an aside, you might also consider bringing a vonage device - set it up in USA first (easier) - it works very well here (and gives you a local number for family to call). We also brought a two-line telephone system, which is nice to have for local calls and Vonage calls.

I wonder if I can get that 3G+ speed in RT or Tanajib. The ADSL at my house in RT has been abysmally slow lately.

Twofeets, our ADSL in DH has been pretty slow as well about 1up/1down MAX. Just not worth it imo.
If you have an iPhone, I am familiar with the Speedtest app (among others), and you could use it to test 3G speeds with different SIMs. I'd be interested in your results.
cheers!

Hi Twofeets,
A guy at work suggested the 5 mb mobily wireless service....sign up for a year for approx 500USD.....you get the modem and can take it anywhere in kingdom when travelling. It sounds good.

It sounds OK, but just a note of caution - Mobily signal covee is not always the best. For instance, there are several areas in Dhahran where a Mobily signal is either unavailable or very weak at best.
You might like to test the Mobily signal strength in your house before sing out for the service (if you don't have a Mobily phone, get someone who has one to come over and see how many "bars" they get).
