Hi I got an offer with Aramco and I should be moving there this summer. I have a 16 year old son and he is going to get his license soon. We live in Texas. Would he be able to get his license and drive in Saudi Arabia or in the compound at least? Thanks!

I know with a license he'll be able to drive on the camp, but off camp.....you may want to wait awhile before he drives off camp here. It's very dangerous, and more so for an inexperienced driver.

Yes I agree with the previous post it IS VERY DANGEROUS as a woman I am not allowed to drive but if I could I would not! it is the worst driving we have experienced in 9 countries in 12 years abroad.
May I add we have to be very careful driving on the compound every day and especially at night time as there are so many small children running around.

Yes but lawfully would he be able to drive in Saudi Arabia? Because my wife won't be able to drive and she wants him to take her to places.

He might be a better driver than some of the 12 year olds I have seen driving in Rahima!

If he gets a Saudi license he can drive off camp. But I agree with previous posts, too dangerous for an inexperienced driver. Our choice: we never allowed our sons to drive off camp. if he gets into an accident he could be taken to the police station, not good unless he speaks Arabic. Better off hiring a private driver, a taxi, or taking the Aramco free provided shopping buses.

LOL some of the drivers out there do seem to have a little difficulty seeing over the steering wheel....
I have seen some teenage drivers with a teacher driving around the camp and assume from seeing them that there must be some sort of drivers ed or certification program for young or new drivers (their training loop appears to run along our street I see them fairly often)
Might be good to check into that as introduction to driving then ease into getting him on the road from there.

I just have to reiterate to wait and see when you get here. I personally wouldn't let my 16 year old drive here...but you need to make that decision on your own. If you do, he'll have to get a Saudi license in order to drive off camp. GOOD LUCK

As far as I am aware, a 16 year-old cannot get a driver's licence in Saudi Arabia anyway. From what I see on the Traffic Dept website, the minimum driving age is 18 (as in most countries in the world).

In DHA every summer there is a driver's ed course for students. The instruction is for Texas licenses and you'd have to check and see if your state accepts it.
