If I buy one of these before I depart will I be able to download books from amazon once I'm in kingdom, (or even from Bahrain if times get desperate)? I fear you will say no...

Failing this, will an iPad/iBooks be a possible (but pricier) alternative?

I download books from Amazon to my Kindle all the time, via the wireless connection in my home. Works great!
There's also supposed to be a way to download e-Books via the Aramco community library, although admittedly, I've yet to have success going that route. Could be that I'm not understanding something in the download process.
But yes to Kindle -- no prob.

I have a 3G Kindle in Jeddah and download books all the time with absolutely no problem. For some of their "special one day deals," you have to be in the US, but we have a laptop with a VPN that gives us a US IP address and I order those on that computer. When my son needs books for book reports and can't find what he likes in the school library, I just download it at home. I love mine!!!! Buy one!

I can't download books with my Kindle from Dhahran. Amazon keeps giving me this message saying my actual country is not what I listed in my account settings (US). How can I avoid this?
How do I set-up a VPN? Are they legal in KSA?

I've been using a Kindle WiFi, Kindle Touch 3G, and a Kindle Fire here with no problems. The only challenge you will have is content for the WiFi devices since your network is detected. A way around this is to order your books through your web browser (select the right country first - usually USA or UK) then do your orders there. Your Kindle will pick them up right away.
I sent you a PM on the other topic.

I had an issue with my Kindle recently, whereby it wasn't allowing me to see or download anything at all. After much annoyance, I finally went into my Amazon account to see if something had changed, even though I order from them often. Sure enough, it had detected my IP address as being in Dhahran and wasn't going to allow me to purchase ebook content from here. All I had to do was simply change my country back from KSA to USA in the Amazon account settings, and voila, my Kindle started working again just fine and I was able to see selections and buy downloads again directly from my Kindle unit. If this happens again, I'll now know to go directly into my account settings in Amazon and be sure something hasn't been switched to KSA on me again. Perhaps it helps that my billing and street address are all in the US. Maybe that helps negate some of the issues of it picking up the Dhahran IP address, and allows me to switch myself back to US.

Hadia, did you merely change your "country settings" in your Amazon account and everything was OK? I did that and Amazon said "Your stated country is different from the country that you appear to be living in" (i.e., my IP address trumped my "country settings"). Changing "country settings" hasn't fooled Amazon into thinking I'm living in the US. My billing address is also US.
Any solutions to get around this?

It's a hit and miss. I have had this problem before with my Kindle and finally I bought a VPN and now buy any kindle book from the computer connected to a VPN. After the purchase from the computer, the book is automatically sent to the Kindle.
It's an extra steps but beats the hassle of trying to figure out all the necessary settings that sometimes works and most of the time doesn't.

I guess I got lucky. I was able to change things back simply by "country settings." It's now been a while since I've tried to visit the Kindle store from my actual Kindle, so the next time I do this, maybe it will have kicked me out again, and who knows, maybe it won't let me back in with my Dhahran IP address. At least I'll know next time what the issue is. Previously, it took me forever to figure this out! LOL
