What is the availability of Gluten Free foods on camp or at nearby grocery stores? How well are the packages labeled? I have family members who are medically required to NOT eat food which contains gluten. thanks

In our local commissaries we can get gluten free flour and sometimes other types of food as well - in the supermarkets in Al Khobar there is more choice of gluten free foods but like everything here in the Kingdom when you see a food item that you like or for a special diet such as gluten free you need or are rather wise to stock up with it at that time.
In Bahrain there is a much varied and larger selection of gluten free products etc.
Hope this helps Carolina

We were in Bahrain yesterday and we visited two main supermarkets there i.e. Carrefour and Lu Lus and I noted there are quite a few food items that are gluten free so maybe worth a trip over oh and yes the other supermarket was Alosra as well had a very good choice.

Thanks, Carolina. I wonder if the restaurants offer gluten free items as well.

We were in Tamimi on corniche - they has a pretty good gluten free selection. Also, it is very easy to get almond flour here - if not available, just ask guy behind the nut counter to grind it for you. There is a growing community of wheat free people here - lots of recipes and knowledge.

In addition to the recommendations above, there is as an Organic Food store in Bahrain in Seef Mall that carries a wide variety of Gluten free products.

Do you need to eat Gluten Free? If so, how hard is it to find GF food at the on campus store and in restaurants?

I have to be very honest gluten free food in restaurants in KSA is really unheard of - obviously there will be many different choices just sticking to vegetarian, salads but KSA for restaurants are not up to the present with this - if I am wrong hopefully someone will correct me on this - I have to adhere to a strict gluten free diet as I have Crohns disease and even if I were to go to any restaurant in KSA and asked them if the dish I had ordered was gluten free and they said YES I would never believe them - for they wish to say YES when they do not understand - again a language barrier.
I am very lucky when I go to my favourite restaurant in Bahrain for they know I can't am gluten intolerance and they cook wonderful gluten free food for me and it is simply bliss.
Like the previous posting I too now go to the Health food store in Seef Mall - just to stock up yes you can get gluten free flour from the commissaries on the compound but you will get more gluten free products from the larger supermarkets in Khobar and obviously Bahrain is even better.

I have seen some gluten free products at the commissary on RT, and not just flour. I just noticed it a few weeks ago, so maybe they have had a special request for it.

I have a wife and an 8 yr old with Celiac. I am currently deciding whether to accept an offer to Aram/Dhahran . How practical and easy will it be for my wife to get SAFE GF food at the grocery stores? Sounds like safe restaurant eating is NOT an option anywhere in KSA. How practical/easy is it to go to Bahrain to eat out? Are there other Celiacs or strict GF eaters like at Aramco? Can you order and "import" your own food via DHL/FedEx or are there restrictions. Thanks.

Yes, you can bring in or ship your GF food to KSA. We bring in food we want every trip. We've brought in Foodstuffs in our DHL shipment. You write your name and badge number on everything in case custom's decides to dump the boxes and check it out - so it all gets back to your box. We've never had that happen, but I've heard others who have.
From Dhahran, Bahrain is 45 mins away, easy to go to. Although, busy times on the causeway can make it a 2 - 6 hour trip. Traffic can be horrible at times. You learn the busy times and go and come back around them. There are people who go after work and come back the same evening and others who go on the weekend, some stay for the weekend; some come home in the evening.
