It IS disrepect, by self-evident definition, to not respect local traditions such as wearing at least an abaya (granted in the airport and on the way home wouldn't be a big deal on arrival to the country).
would it be okay if I cursed in front of your children? Talk about adult-only subjects? No you say? Well, here's a copy of a document your government agreed to that says I can.
Being wrong on this subject at best can cause a little trouble with the mutawain; at worse it can foment hatred that results in Khobar towers type activity. I'm sorry that you don't see things this way.

I really appreciate this discussion. The arrival was one of the unknowns I've been most worried about. Since my departure date is likely to be within the next 2 weeks, I will not spend the time to purchase an abaya here in TX. Now instead, I will wear my conservative western clothes with confidence, knowing I am not being disrespectful. I would rather take my time to pick out my 'cape' when I am there. (Being a superhero with a cape sounds more appealing than being forced to cover up, so that's what I've decided to call it. ) As for the lines, patience is always necessary - as is a good iPod/playlist - no matter what country or circumstance. I also appreciated the advice about exchanging to Riyals prior to the flight. What amount would you recommend? {Please reference another posting if I'm getting off-topic here.} One last question: What should I wear on the plane that will be both comfortable and not sloppy or too casual once I meet my rep/driver? Thank you to all of you for keeping these forums going. It really means a lot to those of us newbies! K. (recently engaged, professional female embarking on a year alone)

Your passports are taken to get your iqama and your resident visa. You can then pick up your passport at the passport office. Aramco professional employees can keep their passports, turning them in for visas and iqamas when needed. Employees go to Bahrain all the time and you need your passport for doing this.

Vpainter, could you expand on this? I will be coming as an Engineer II. Does this mean I keep my passport when at the airport and only turn it over for my Iqama at a later time? If so when do I turn it over and when would I get it back.
Also, does this apply for my wife and children's passports?

First try to get in the line which says business visitor, shorter than the foreign national lines, I was told by immigration officer to go in that line, moved much faster, finger print, picture. That picture shows up on your Iquama, so please plan accordingly. I had a colleague had his eyes closed, tired.. Once you pick your luggage ad clear customs (they pass luggage through scanner) did not open anything in my case, driver was there to pick me up with my name sign. Took me to Aramco office, gave my passport and picture. He Aramco rep there gave me copy of passport, temporary ID, folder with basic info and schedule for my orientation and yes my house key. Driver took me to residence. When got email for my Iqama, went to pick my passport and Iqama. Gave my passport right back with fee for multiple exit/reentry visa. Also booklet for travel to Bahrain. Should get my visa and passport in about a week or so. Orientation is very detailed and person specific so this info will make much more sense then. Very detailed checklist/steps. Things sort of slow until get Iqama, once get it can open bank account and apply for Driver license. Good idea to rent a car if coming with family, will deduct money from your paycheck later. Some repeion here, please search for more info on the forum. family part - hopefully smeone else may add comment. good luck

Everyone of the family gets their own iqama now, so all passports will be taken to get the iqamas and then to get the resident visas.
