Hi folks, great forum site i have to say. I've received my offer from Aramco and will be based in Udhailiyah. Im trying to find out as much as possible about the facilities on the compound. Most of the posts are for the main compounds but not many for this one.I worked in Saudi Arabia a while back,so i know where it is,I just never had the chance to visit it. I will be arriving on family status with 2 children(6+2). Are there many British (Scottish)expats there?

Small Compound (1500ish). Very few Brits. Arabic a major advantage.
May explain the limited number of posts.

I would suggest you PM or email the following users who actually live in UDH:
waw8951 - may have already arrived to UDH. In Aug. 2011 he was coming to UDH.
UmmRiyam - lives in UDH

o
I am a Scot living here in RT and my new neighbour with her husband lived in UDH for 3 years they are from Canada and she has reported that they had a great life there with wonderful amenities - yes it is far away from Khobar and Bahrain but the community in UDH appears to be close knit and of course a wonderful compound for your children to do well at school.
Vpainter was good enough to give to you contacts in UDH and so I hope you will PM them as well.
All the very best and once you get settled why don't you come for a visit to us here in RT as the weather now is great for walking outside etc.
Kind Regards Carolina

Thank you Carolina, vpainter. I'm sure there are millions of questions still to ask, but for now, can you tell me how to PM on here?
Also, what are the school times in UDH: ie daily start/stop, holidays ?
Thanks

o I am from Perthshire
Which part of Scotland are you from - please disregard the information about Arabic I have no idea about that as everyone in UDH speaks English!
There is a very good community there - and I do hope to help you and your family that someone from UDH will chip in and help you on this forum if not as I have said my neighbour lived there for 3 years so I can ask her for as much information as she is also a teacher here in RT so I am sure I can gain a lot of information from her but as I said already she was very happy there she only moved due to her husband's change of employment etc.
On a positive note your children will be very well looked after and will gain excellent education so good luck.

Hi everyone, My name is Dan and have subscribed to this forum for some information from people on the ground in UDH. My son is a Petroleum Engineer and has received his first international posting to this location. As concerned and probably overprotective parents, we are delighted by the career opportunity this provides but wonder about his safety. As Australians we are somewhat isolated from world events and need to rely on media or government reports and we all know they can be distorted. Our government has put out a travel warning for Saudi Arabia due to threats of terrorist attacks. I hope it is not insensitive to ask this but we have no other way of learning the truth. Can anyone provide me with some insight about how real this threat might be and the level of danger to employees in the oil and gas industry in UDH. Kind regards, Dan

Hi! Dan,
Sorry it has taken a couple of days for me to get to approving posts.
The U.S. also puts out those travel warnings and they are scary if all you have to go by is news reports back home. They have been coming out and being renewed the whole 13+ years we have been here.
Safety is no greater concern than it will be if your son was in Australia in a major city or in the U.S. or anywhere in Europe. In fact he will probably be safer here.
We came from Houston, TX and are much safer than living there.
Everyone needs to be aware of their surroundings at all times and avoid being in large crowds. just as you would in any major city of the world. Your personal safety always requires a vigilance of paying attention to your surroundings.
The local people are very nice. All countries have their radicals and the same is true for Saudi Arabia. The general population is not what you see on the news. They are welcoming and nice.
The difference is the crime rate in Saudi Arabia is much less than other countries because of the severe consequences for crime. Unless you go to Riyadh, a large city, even petty crime is minimal. You do not have to worry about your safety here, you just need to remain vigilant of your surroundings just as you would anywhere.
My parents were also worried that we came here and with 3 of their grandchildren, until they came to visit. They no longer were worried about our safety once they saw for themselves where we lived.
I encoue you to come visit your son once he is here, so you to can be at peace regarding where he is working and living.

Dear Vpainter, Thanks very much for your reply. It was most reassuring. I am also hoping to be able to get some feedback from current residents of UDH. It would be great if I could communicate with someone in that location. Yes, we would certainly visit my son at the first opportunity. Cheers, Dan
