First I want to thank the moderators of this site. You are doing a wonderful job. I have a few questions and I would be grateful you could help with some answers.
1. I am through with all the contigencies and I have sent my passport for the visa. It has been 2 weeks since. Can someone tell me how long it takes to get the visa? 2. I started my new job less than a year ago here in the States. I would have to pay back my relocation if I should leave for Aramco. Will Aramco be willing to pay for this? 3. Will my flat screen Samsung TV work in Dhahran? 4. Is it through that, KLM allows 3 bags (2x70 + 50) each for the business class?
Thank you

4) This info is from the KLM website. Your baggage allowance is noted when you book a flight, be sure to look for it.
Free baggage allowance
Free baggage allowance Economy Class 1 item of check-in baggage, each max. 23 kg (50.5 lbs), max. 158 cm (62 inches) l + w + h Business Class 2 items of check-in baggage, each max. 32 kg (70.5 lbs), max. 158 cm (62 inches) l + w + h Flying Blue Silver, Gold and Platinum members and SkyTeam Elite and Elite Plus members +1 item of check-in baggage, max. 158 cm (62 inches) l + w + h, and max. 23 kg (50.5 lbs) in Economy Class, max. 32 kg (70.5 lbs) in Business Class
3) I have been told (don't personally know) that U.S. TV's work with OSN satellite TV service.
2) You'd have to get that clarified up front. Talk to your relocation contact person about this issue.
1) A few days to a few months. Sorry, no definitive answer.
Thank you for your thanks, and you are most welcome. Welcome to Aramco!

We came over on KLM last Dec and after four different calls to KLM was finally told that it is 3 bags at 50 pounds. They have switched from the two at 70 but not updated everything. I know a few people here who did the two at 70 and had to pay extra. I recommend calling and just collecting names so you have them if needed at the ticket counter. We also flew with two dogs and they were wonderful with all our bags and making it hassle free.
We brought all our U.S. tvs and they work. My husband did get some sort of converter thing in the States before coming. I will ask him and let you know. I would personally bring them. We have one hooked up to the computer to watch netflix and network shows like CBS. It has to run through our VPN (makes it look like we are in the States) but is worth it!

Julz How do you hook the computer up to the TV?

To answer the TV question- We have a Pal-Secam to NTSC Video Converter by Com World. We also have another brand that does the same thing. We paid about $180 for each but it would cost a few thousand to replace our DLP and Plasma tv's so was worth it. Plus they work with our wii, dvd players, etc.
For the computer hook-up you need a HDMI cable. If your computer is new enough it will have a spot to place one. You just plug it into the tv and computer and are done. We actually had bought just a tower in the States for this purpose and then used the tv as the monitor. We have a wireless keyboard and mouse that go with it.

I just heard this...
On August 30, 2010, the Saudi Arabian Council of Ministers agreed to change electrical voltage ratings in the Kingdom to 230/400 volt in residential and commercial buildings. To comply with the government’s direction, Saudi Aramco houses which were originally wired for 120V will have additional 208V outlets installed. An avee of four outlets will be connected in the kitchen, living room and hallway in each house during the transition time. New hires are advised to adopt 208-230V since the import of all 120V appliances is banned and selling of 120V appliances will soon be banned in the local market.

I'm not sure when that "announcement" was issued or by whom but there is nothing on the official company announcements website to that effect, that I can find. Up till now, they have not installed any 220V outlets in the majority of houses, at least in Dhahran, as far as I am aware.
When I asked about it for my house (some 220V outlets would be useful, especially in the kitchen), I was told there were no plans at the moment to install such outlets.
On another thread earlier this month (April 2012), vpainter posted the following info:

Also, although the Council of Ministers did indeed make such a decree in 2010, the full announcement went on to say that this plan:
So even if the plan is proceeding on schedule (a rarity over here) the preparations would not be complete till 2020, and full implementation of the changeover would not be till 2035.

I just visited a friend of mine who has just joined Aramco about 4 days back. The house is obviously empty (Dhahran camp) and it was refurbished. I noticed several 220v plug points installed officially by Aramco (it has the 220v stickers) and the plug points are the British version (3 square pins) and the plug point housing is also typical british version (a square housing). Saw that this has been installed at the living room, the kitchen and several more upstairs.
Makes me wonder if I can request for the same installation for my house. Getting a 110v vacuum cleaner is a pain in the neck.

No harm in trying - I have tried at least three times and been told they are not installing them in my area "at this time" but they will put my name on a waiting list.
In other areas (as you have seen) they are apparently already installing them.

I arrived 1.5 weeks. I moved into a house near the main 6th street entrance. The house is totally refurbished. New furniture, new carpet, new grass, new paint, new applicances, etc. I was overly pleasantly suprised. Not that it matters to me but there were no 220 volt outlets.
