Transformers are sold by size. Anywhere from 75W to several hundred watts. They are relatively inexpensive 50-200 SR (and unsightly and usually found at the head of an array of plug adapters and extension cords). You can find them at Saco (hardware store) - the new SACO World has a good selection. In Rahima, you can find them at the Sony store. I have seen small ones (75W) that plug into a wall like an adapter - be careful with these as I have had one melt supplying a 60W light; but I have another on 15W that is doing OK.

Thank you so much for your responses. I wondered if transformers are the "norm" on the compounds? I'd understood that 120v appliances for newbies are a bit short supply and as such you'd be buying 220v appliances which would need transforming. Is this all wrong? kindest Anna

My thoughts which I posted on another thread. I was in Saco at the weekend and there's plenty of 110 appliances. Hey guys, If you're really attached to something, best to ship it. But, you can pretty much get anything you need here in Saudi saco-ksa.com/English/Home - may give you an idea of some household items, tools etc. www.panda.com.sa/ - one of the big supermarket chains www.jarirbookstore.com/ - books & electronics Most areas of the country also are located reasonably close to some big shopping malls containing all the globalised clothing brands. IKEA is also popular for household goods, Apple have a few stores etc etc. The above are just some links to give you an idea of whats available. Sorry it's not really advice, just a chance to have a browse. I've also seen some comments about the 110/220v items - right now they are available in places like Saco but also in many many small local stores. I really can't see changes happening that quicklyGood luck Buster

Transformers are not required. There are plenty of 110V appliances/devices available here. I use transformers for 220V appliances that I bought by accident, or for special light fixtures. Normal light fixtures (e.g., lamps from Ikea) will always have 220V plugs. You can use an adapter and plug them into 110V with 110V light bulbs (or just change the plug - note, north american plugs sold here are not the greatest - last trip, I bought a whole bunch from Home Depot...).

o
I am back early from vacation and sick with pneumonia but I noted this on the forum and I must caution all of you about the use of transformers - they are dangerous! there have been quite a few houses that have gone up on fire! because of them - personally I won't have them in the house - no way - ok maybe some of you have had them for years but it is simply not worth putting your family at risk using them - there is such a huge debate going on about when Aramco will convert to 220 volts maybe one day but that day is far off - yes as the previous post said SACO at the moment have 110 volts appliances but and I say BUT by LAW in the Kingdom 110 volts appliances are being phased out and perhaps check with SACO but I am certain that by next year they will not be allowed to stock them - if I am wrong please someone on the forum correct me on this one.
So the answer at the moment is YES if any new arrivals are coming over from the US or any other country that have 110 volts do bring your 110 volts appliances - think this is the best way forward for the time being but I am very uncertain when eventually we will all be switched over to 220 volts? yes and so the debate continues.
Anyway on a positive note - lovely being back here to RT to my home and to get better! shame our planned vacation was cut so very short.
Greetings to you all Carolina
