o all,
I will be arriving in Dhahran on Oct. 14th. This forum has been very helpful in answering many of my questions. However, I have one more question - is there an endocrinologist assigned to the hospital on camp? I'm sure insulin and diabetic supplies are readily available. I have family members who are type 1 diabetic and I would like to know how easy it is to obtain diabetic supplies. Does anyone have any experience in this matter?
Thanks again for your help.... Ultra

Hi Ultra The hospital here is very experienced in dealing with Diabetic patients, it's quite a problem in the Arab world. My husband is type 1 diabetic and I must admit when we came here it was a cause of anxiety to me, especially worrying about the hot weather, wearing sandals, foot care etc. I would say that his diabetic care has been as good here as it was in the UK, they keep a close eye on him, do regular check ups etc. The only thing he still does in the UK is his eye checks but I would imagine those are available here too. I don't think he sees an endocrinologist his care is managed through his famiy physician and the diabetic clinic. Hope this helps

I am a type 1 diabetic. The care here is the same if not better then the States. They have several endocrinologist including two pediatric endocrinologist. Most of the care is done through your family doctor but they will refer you on to the endo if you want. They also do yearly eye check ups here. I thought they were required as my doctor always insists on them. They do lab every 3 months just like the States and supplies are picked up on a two month basis. Please ask if you have more questions about this. I have not found that the weather has had a huge affect on me although I came from Houston and the summers are both really hot. Best of luck!

Awesome! Thanks for your replies henpecked and Julz62. Your information gives me peace of mind. Am I correct in assuming your diabetic supplies and insulin are free? My wife and son are both on pumps. Are pump supplies available?
Again, thanks for the info. See you soon....

Hi Ultra definite yes to the free insulin and supplies. Health care - though not dentistry - is free to Aramco employees. Don't know about the pumps - my husband injects.

I do injections as well so I am not sure on the pump supplies. I do know that they will get you whatever you need if they don't already have it here. I believe there are numerous people with pumps here though it shouldn't be an issue. They give me two different insulin pens, needles for the pens, and testing strips. They would have given me a meter as well but I already had 4. I use one touch mini's. Yes it is all free which is HUGE!!!! They will take good care of you here! Best of luck!!
